50 YEARS ON....

Well, you know the story. Dallas 34-Eagles 14. Go Packers.

GERLACH OUT

In what was a long shot campaign, Congressman Jim Gerlach has dropped out of the race for Governor in 2010 on the GOP side. He’ll seek re-election to Congress now that he’s dropped out. Gerlach represents a suburban Philadelphia district who said his position on the ballot may have changed, but not his goals of holding down taxes and giving businesses more freedom to operate. Gerlach said the cost of a statewide campaign was prohibitive. Only state Attorney General Tom Corbett, regarded as the front-runner, and state Rep. Sam Rohrer, remain on the ballot. The primary is May 18. This usually happens in GOP politics in the state, the field is usually cleared by either the party bosses or the candidates themselves as a way to trim the herd and conserve energy and money for the fall effort. Look for all candidates to be mugging for the cameras at the Pennsylvania Farm Show this week.

MADEIRA IN

David Madeira told the The Times Leader that he will run For Congressman Chris Carney's seat in the 10th. He'll declare later this month. He ran unsuccessfully in 2006 for the state Senate seat that was vacated when Charles Lemmond retired. He finished second to victor Lisa Baker in a five-person race for the GOP nod.

BIDEN'S MOM

Vice President Joe Biden lost his mom this week. Biden's mother was prominent on the campaign trail when he ran in '08 with President Obama. The former Catherine Eugenia Finnegan was born July 7, 1917, in Scranton. In 1941, she married businessman Joseph Biden Sr., with whom she had four children. The couple moved from Scranton to Claymont, Del., in 1953, when their eldest son, Joe, was 10 years old. Joseph Biden Sr. died in 2002 at age 86. According to Biden’s 2007 autobiography, “Promises to Keep,” his mother had some reservations about whether he should risk a promising career as a young lawyer to enter politics.“You’re not going to run for Senate and ruin your reputation, are you?” he recalled his mother asking. He did run and to date his reputation, in large part thanks to that scrappy upbringing in Scranton, is just fine.
