PHOTO INDEX: GOVERNOR ED RENDELL.

FOUL BALL #2

Gov.
Ed Rendell is willing to release up to $20 million in state funds for repairs at the Lackawanna County stadium to keep the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in the area. That news came from his press office the other day. This is a pretty easy lay up for the Guv because the legislature authorized up to $35 million for the project in a 2008 capital budget. Rendell said he is willing to release $20 million of those funds if he can get approval from the State lawmakers. Lackawanna County Commissioners have said publicly that the Stadium needs at least $13 million in repairs. The grant would cover up to half the cost of repairing the facility or constructing a new stadium,. he rest of the funds would need to come from the local community or how’s this for a different approach, why not ask the Yankees. The Yankees in 2009 made a 610 million dollar profit. With Governor Ed cutting social programs and libraries, the time to use state funding for a new stadium is just plain morally wrong. Plus there is nothing radically wrong with the Stadium.

Let the Yanks fund it themselves. Public money has many valid uses, funding stadiums especially in these lean times, is outright foolish.
The Yanks do not have a great fan base in our area for their minor league team. And if, by chance this billion dollar corporation threatens again to boot the area, all I can say is good riddance!
Laying off one teacher/social worker or health care worker in the name of funding a ball club is not just dumb, it is downright immoral. God bless.

I agree 100% on your statement about the funding for the stadium. In the paper they are complaining about the ticket prices going sky high since the Yanks took over. Do you think they will lower them if we build them a new stadium? Use this money for needed school and social programs.
