PHOTO INDEX: A FLYER PROMOTING A KENNEDY RALLY, THE ELECTORAL MAP OF 1960 (WE WERE BLUE AND RED BACK THEN BUT DIDN'T KNOW IT!) AND JFK ON THE STUMP.

50 YEARS AGO TONIGHT

We always seem to try to mark milestones in this country by the passage of time. To people of a certain age, the events of the 1960s started on a fall Tuesday in November when John Kennedy became President. The event kicked off a tumultuous decade that would rock America to its core. And two of the principal players, John Kennedy and his brother would not live to see the culmination of events. The next day at school, everyone was talking about the first Catholic President. It was a time of unbridled optimism. And even though I was way to young to understand the complexity and the details of what happened, even at the age of 6 I knew it was big. Here's how the story was reported the next morning when most of the results were in.

The sixties started with such promise. I am older than you by 10 or so years Yonks, and I remember much about that election. My family was proud and thrilled to have a Catholic President and we thought the Kennedys were great. All except for my Dad who was not a Catholic and not one bit fooled by the royal family from New England. He always said the old man was a bootlegger and the rest were phonies. As time went on we learned he was pretty much right on all scores. Camelot was a farce
and the Kennedy greatness never came to fruition. The men were womanizers and one so selfish he let a young girl drown to protect his interests. In the end it was a big letdown and that comes from a true believer who once admired Bobby above all. They looked and sounded great, but as to substance,
they all had the morals of a snake!

Jack Kennedy's least talked about legacy; making gov't unions possible and having secretaries making six figures. Everyone complains about the congress, expand that many times for the gov't union employee hacks. A lot of money, a lot of benefits, not a lot of services.
