DEBATE PREVIEW

Tomorrow President Obama faces off against Mitt Romney in their second Presidential debate. This will be in the town meeting format. Obama needs to look competent and convince people he has the tools to solve their problems in his second term. Romney needs to do the opposite, he needs to make people believe that a multi millionaire understand what they are going through in a tough economy. What may happen is that one person might ask a question and these guys might debate about it over and over. The wild card in this debate will be the uncommitted voters chosen to ask questions. Like old time entertainers who don’t want to be upstaged by cute pets or kids, politicians have to thread carefully when dealing with a format like this. Their body language has to be focused on the questioner and they must make sure they walk a fine line between decorum and relating to the common folk asking the big questions. A town meeting is not as easy as it looks. In short, Obama needs to ramp up and Romney needs to dial it down. If they don’t, Obama will look like a wimp and Romney will look like deranged bully. My girl Candy Crowley will try to control the event.

LAWTON POSTPONES PRESENTATION

Luzerne County Manager Robert Lawton canceled his budget presentation for today. Originally set for 1pm today, the announcement was rescheduled  for Friday in order for Lawton to consult with managers to see if there was any new revenue or if they can make additional cuts. This sounds ominous to me.

McGOVERN IN HOSPICE

The great political giants of the 1960s seem to be departing. The AP ran a story this afternoon about Senator George McGovern who has entered a hospice. Here’s that story:
Longtime former U.S. Sen. George McGovern, the Democratic presidential candidate who lost to President Richard Nixon in a historic landslide, has moved into hospice care near his home in South Dakota, his family said Monday. “He’s coming to the end of his life,” his daughter, Ann McGovern, told The Associated Press. She declined to elaborate but noted that her 90-year-old father has suffered several health problems in the last year. George McGovern, who became a leader of the Democrats’ liberal wing during his three decades in Congress, lost his 1972 challenge to Nixon, who later resigned amid the Watergate scandal. McGovern has turned his focus in recent years to world hunger. It was after a lecture tour last October that he was treated for exhaustion. Two months later, he fell and hit his head just before a scheduled interview with C-SPAN for a program focusing on failed presidential candidates who’ve had a lasting impact on American politics. McGovern also spent several days in a Florida hospital in April for tests to determine why he occasionally passed out and had difficulty speaking.

SENATOR ARLEN SPECTER TO BE REMEMBERED ON SPECIAL LIVE PCN CALL-IN PROGRAM

Former U.S. Senator Arlen Specter lost his battle to cancer and passed away on Sunday, October 14. The Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) will air a special LIVE PCN Call-In program in memory of the Senator on Tuesday, October 16 beginning at 8:00 p.m. The program will pay tribute to Pennsylvania’s longest-serving U.S. Senator and will feature guests Pete DeCoursey of Capitolwire.com and Christopher Nicholas, a former campaign manager to Sen. Specter. Viewers will be able to share their comments and questions with the guests by dialing toll-free at 1-877-PA6-5001 during the LIVE hour-long program. For those without access to cable or those unable to get to a TV, PCN’s LIVE streaming will also be made available online by subscribing to PCN Select at pcntv.com. For more information about the streaming service, visit http://pcntv.com/pcn-plus/subscribe-to-premium-content/. Specter was first elected to represent Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate as a Republican in 1980. A 30-year incumbent, Specter changed party affiliation in 2009 and in 2010 he lost his bid for the Democratic nomination to a sixth term. The former U.S. Senator reflected on his personal and professional life during a special five-part, 15-hour oral history series produced by PCN. “Arlen Specter: An Oral History” premiered on the network in May of this year.

Yonk, I agree that there appears to be a problem with Lawton's budget. We can't overlook the fact that the debt payment for next year will jump from $25 million to $29 million. They are doing this using the Tea Party (disastrous) method of no tax increase and cutting jobs. I've said it time and again. Until they have the foresight to create a dedicate tax for debt and remove it from the general fund, the county will run like a car with two flat tires. It isn't easy to make the hard decisions but for people to think that government can operate without new funds each year is absurd. Most things increase each year, I see it in my own household. I can't go into the year thinking I will eliminate my electric bill or health insurance or drop my life insurance, I have to simply meet my new financial needs. Lawton has already admitted that some departments have been cut too deeply and the work load is being affected. That's why there is a problem transferring the work load of some departments to others and then they have two departments that are not working well. If they continue this type of management, the new form of government will never work. It might be a good start if the two former county commissioners (Urban and Brominski) would resign and allow two positive thinking citizens to take their place. Urban simply votes no on issues and Brominski joins each meeting with a look on his face as though he is going to war. Then Brominski votes no on everything. One meeting found him not paying attention and they discovered an error in their format and had to do a role call. When they called Bromo's name, he said in a hash tone, NO! They had to explain to him that it was a roll call vote. These are the type leaders we don't need.

Hi Mr. Yonki,
I have a question, and I am not sure where to post or send it. I am curious why you never gave a promo to Sue Henry's appearance on WBRE?
In the past, you have been accused of being "in the tank" for WILK, but lately you haven't mentioned them much and totally ignoring Sue's TV appearance seemed odd to me.
Has Nancy Kman's & Steve Corbett's constant derision of bloggers finally gotten to you? Have you realized that these peole have never really respected you? Or, is it something else?
Just curious. Additonally, can we conclude that you are no longer the non-official, official blogger and defender for and of all things WILK?

I proposed a method of using a dedicated set of taxes that would not have come from property owners, and obviously people didn't care. Some of us have been saying that we need a dedicated method to reduce the debt for a while.

TO BE HONEST, I MISSED THAT SHOW AS WELL AS THE FACT THAT SHE WAS EVEN ON IT. LAST WEEKEND LULAC RAN TWO FEATURES, AS WELL AS TWO TRIBUTES TO THE LATE DR. DONALD BUZINKAI AND SENATOR ARLEN SPECTER. WE ARE BACKED UP ON TIME AND STORIES. UNLIKE OTHER BLOGS, WE ACTUALLY HAVE A SET FORMAT OF NEWS AND COMMENTARY DELIVERY AND 90% OF WHAT LULAC POSTS COMES FROM ME. AND WE DON'T HAVE AN INTERN PROGRAM. (WELL THAT WOULDN'T WORK EITHER, JUST SAYING). SO I'M SORRY I MISSED HER APPEARANCE.
In the past, you have been accused of being "in the tank" for WILK, but lately you haven't mentioned them much and totally ignoring Sue's TV appearance seemed odd to me.
SHALL I CUT MY WRISTS ON PUBLIC SQUARE TO MAKE YOU HAPPY? I'LL GO TO CONFESSION. SORRY AGAIN FOR MISSING IT.
Has Nancy Kman's & Steve Corbett's constant derision of bloggers finally gotten to you?
THE ONLY BLOGGERS I EVER HEARD CORBETT AND KMAN DISS ARE ONES WHO CAN'T COMMUNICATE WITH THEM AND THOSE WHO ARE UNFAIR AS A WHOLE. SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.
Have you realized that these peole have never really respected you?
I DON'T WORRY ABOUT "RESPECT", I HAVE A LOT OF STUFF GOING ON. YOU KEEP TRACK OF THAT FOR ME OKAY? DO YOU KNOW EXCEL? GET ME A SPREADSHEET ON WHO RESPECTS AND WHO DISRESPECTS DAVID YONKI.
Additonally, can we conclude that you are no longer the non-official, official blogger and defender for and of all things WILK?
NEVER WAS THE OFFICIAL BLOGGER OF ANY ENTITY BUT LULAC. BUT WHEN PEOPLE MAKE SCURRILOUS COMMENTS ABOUT PEOPLE IN THE MEDIA OR OTHERWISE, I'LL WRITE ABOUT IT.
THANKS FOR YOUR PASSIONATE INTEREST IN MY WELL BEING. AND THANKS FOR READING AND POSTING.

Yonk, I love your responses to the malcontents. They are, without exception, to the point, courteous, and nearly irrefutable. A lot of PR hacks could take a lesson from you.
