The LuLac Edition #2502, August 25th, 2013

CROSSFIRE AND SECTION 8

Yesterday two children were shot in a crossfire at Sherman Hills in Wilkes Barre. They were the victims of the gun and drug violence that has permeated the city. News reports on TV said that the shooting was over turf and money.
So if the turf of gang shooters is not private property they own, or if they are not natives of this city with deeded property, then maybe some intervention is in order. Drastic measures need to be taken to stop this madness. There will be those who might say it infringes on constitutional rights but let them take it court. Oh, sorry most of lawyers of the "turf warriors" are public defenders.
Here's what needs to be done to protect good people from bad people doing horrific things. Unfortunately the good people minding their own business will be inconvenienced but at least they will be safe.
1. All rentals at public housing like Sherman Hills need weekly audits to see who is living there. Residents on the lease will all be required to have a housing ID. If they have "visitors" they must also have an ID.
2. All residents over the age of 12 must submit to a bi weekly drug test. Since drugs seem to be the big bone of contention, by testing residents you will get a good indication of where the turf wars are originating.
3. Anyone falling a drug test or harboring a "visitor" will be evicted and their children will be put in protective services.
4. All residents who have children are required to put the name of the father on the birth certificate of the child and have it with them along with their IDs.
5. Any person loitering in the public housing area and not showing proof of residency will be arrested.
6. The soup kitchen on Jackson Street should have operations suspended until this crime situation gets under control.
7. All residents who live in Section 8 housing should be required to report to a public area for a work assignment that will contribute positively to the community. Failure to comply will lead to eviction.
I know this is drastic but something needs to be done. When I knew people in Section 8 housing, right there on Parkview Circle, they were working to get out and live a better life. There was no such thing as a turf war started by losers who had no pot to piss in and attached themselves to people ripe for being taken advantage of. Neighbors chased them back to "the big city".
The good tenants sick of getting their lives shattered might not like the rules, but will live by them if it gets rid of the "turf warriors".
Some one needs to send a message loud and clear to these maniacs that Wilkes Barre is not their turf and to get the hell out.
Most "turf warriors" are lazy and want to take the easy way out all the time. Most "turf warriors" are not as powerful without a place to crash and a weapon to instill fear.
Make it harder for them, take away their enablers and their guns, and you'll see how quick things will change. But we can't take half measures anymore. If we hesitate, more mothers will be cradling more bleeding children in their arms because of "turf warriors".
They must be stopped: COLD.
They must be stopped: NOW.
Then we can debate the Constitition and rights of criminals to our hearts content....after we get the scumbags out of town.

Your solutions are not simply drastic, they are not simply unconstitutional, they are racist and worse are pure evil.
To combat the policies put into place by larger and larger government, that began under the great society, you opt to destroy the rights of the innocent, in the guise of "protection."

The entitlment brand of government that you have advocated on this blog is the true cause of the problem and these criminals are the symptoms. Like a cancer doctor who treats metastatic disease by going after the secondary sites but never the primary tumor, you solution will be at best as ineffectual, at worst as incompetent.
This past week you attacked business owners responding to government largess, but defended the "working poor."
You use the same "code" words the nutcase tea party people use.
working poor = white
thug/turfloard = black or hispanic.
Instead of simpling eliminating the cause, government programs, you want to punish all as if the are guilty.
It is no surprise that you attacked Edward Snowden, becuase you don't support our constitution. You believe more strongly in a preceived sense of security over genuine freedom. What is more surprising is how you hated George W. Bush, who's view of the consitution was the same as yours, "it is just a goddam piece of paper."
Your way was used in the past, mass sterilizations, a star on the breast, serial numbers etched into the forearm and showers that lacked water, but from the spout poured gas.
It was a sad day that fear and hate mongering was used in the 1930's; what is sadder is that fear and hate is still being used in 2013.

Dave,
All of your 7 points of action are all meaningful. In a perfect world.
Couple of questions in regards to some of your points.
1. Weekly audits- I imagine there are a large amount of folks living in the complex. Who is going to pay the costs of this weekly audit?

2. Drug testing- again who is going to administer it, keep proper tracking so no tampering happens and cost of the processing of the samples. Let alone is someone wants to fight the results in a court of law.

4. Birth certs- Wow who carry's a copy of their B cert with them?

Shut soup kitchen- why punish poor innocent folks who need the soup kitchen daily for some thugs.

Sorry Dave, you might be a little off the mark on this one.

This was a budding problem in 2004. THEN is when the City leaders should have started pushing back.

As you may recall, at that time we had a spineless group on Council that would "rubber stamp" whatever the Mayor proposed. They turned a blind eye, and a deaf ear to the public that was beginning to feel the ground swell.

The Crime Watch groups went before many Council sessions, and some Police spoke anonymously about the need for more officers, and better equipment to contain the problem.

The Mayor and the then Council took this as a joke, and even went on to ridicule some of the citizens who spoke up!!

For the longest time, the Mayor was in denial. "What Crime"?? and "Crime is down" !! Crime was a non issue, and he hardly ever spoke about it. NOW, after several deaths, and finally children being shot in a crossfire, Now he has diarrhea of the mouth, and states that he won't tolerate this behavior in the City ???

I have read several commentaries that were posted by financial supporters and donors to his campaigns. However, the purpose of being a leader is to lead!! When things turn sour, take command. Be at the forefront of the fray. Immerse yourself in the problem and resolve it. Herein is where you will find that the suckies, and cronies you have surrounded yourself with, become useless, and you have to turn to law enforcement, and the public to repel this assault on our city. Hopefully, we the public don't have to say, "Where were you, and why were you not listening when we tried to tell you"??

Drastic suggestions, Dave, but I cant say I would be against any if they were put in place. Of course innocents would suffer. Show me a war where they don't. Living on the dole has become an accepted way of life and generations are raised who aspire to no more. Its time for war on the home front. Money wasted on foreign endeavors could easily be redirected. Call in the National Guard, patrol the streets and deal with all offenders with prompt fair clear justice! Start now and maybe the cities can be saved if it isn't already too late. I have reservations, but as in war sometimes these simply must be overlooked.

Completely Disgusted

IN RESPONSE

Dave,
All of your 7 points of action are all meaningful. In a perfect world.
Couple of questions in regards to some of your points.
1. Weekly audits- I imagine there are a large amount of folks living in the complex. Who is going to pay the costs of this weekly audit?
THE COSTS WOULD COME OUT OF A DEDCATED CRIME BUDGET IN COOPERATION WITH THE HOUSING AUTHORITY.
2. Drug testing- again who is going to administer it, keep proper tracking so no tampering happens and cost of the processing of the samples. Let alone is someone wants to fight the results in a court of law.
WE WASTE MORE MONEY ON OTHER THINGS LIKE CONFERENCES FOR FEDERAL EMPLOYEES THAN DOING WHAT WE NEED TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE.
4. Birth certs- Wow who carry's a copy of their B cert with them?
THEY DON'T HAVE TO CARRY THEM BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE THEM WHEN THEIR PLACE IS INSPECTED. YOU GET A RENT SUBSIDY, YOU COMPLY. OR MOVE.
Shut soup kitchen- why punish poor innocent folks who need the soup kitchen daily for some thugs.
OKAY, YOU'RE RIGHT ON THIS. THERE ARE VERY NEEDY PEOPLE WHO SHOULD NOT GET PUNISHED. A BIT OF AN OVER REACTION ON MY PART.
Sorry Dave, you might be a little off the mark on this one.
APPRECIATE AS ALWAYS YOUR COGENT THOUGHTS.

Wow, you really are a buffoon.
STILL LACKING ORIGINALITY IN YOUR INSULTS I SEE.
Good luck getting that stuff to stand up in court.
IT WILL NEVER GET TO COURT BECAUSE THE "TURF WARRIORS" DON'T WANT THAT KIND OF TROUBLE.
Close the soup kitchen? You're not only a buffoon, you are a compassionless buffoon.
I'M PULLING BACK ON THAT ONE. I'M VERY COMPASSIONATE BUT YOU REACH A POINT WHERE COMPASSION HAS ITS LIMITS WHEN PEOPLE GAME THE SYSTEM, KIDS LIVING THEIR LIVES GET WOUNDED BY GUN TOTING THUGS AND PEOPLE WHO NEED WELFARE OR HOUSING ARE DENIED BECAUSE LAZY SLUGS HARBORING "VISITORS" ARE TAKING UP SPACE INTENDED FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT.
Shame on you. I wonder what those Catholic priests back in Pittston think of you.
THEY'RE DEAD. I'M SURE I'M THE LAST THING ON THEIR MIND.

They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security” Benjamin Franklin.
I AGREE BUT THIS IS A TEMPORARY MEASURE. SORRY IF I WASN'T CLEAR ON THAT.
It is sad that you have become one of the fear mongers. This was done after 9/11, and make no mistake the terrorist have won. No matter who we imprisioned, no matter who we killed, we are a changed nation. Our citizens willingly gave up their consititutional rights because Bush/Obama have convinced us that we are weak little pushovers, needing the nanny to protects us.
I'M NOT A FEAR MONGER. I'M JUST STATING A KICK ASS PLAN DESIGNED TO SHOW WE AREN'T PUSHOVERS. IT IS TIME TO PUSH BACK.
Is it sad children were harmed? Of course it is. How many cries for change have been to protect the children? Too many. How many actually have protected the children? None.
The problem is an entitlement mentality combined with a lack of police presence. It is time to stop wasting money elsewhere and stop telling people simply because they need, they shall have. Additionally, we need begin to put cops on the streets. This what Ruddy G did in NYC, and in a short period of time the war zones of Koch/Dinkins disappeared as crime dropped.
AND THERE HAS TO BE LIMITS ON THOSE ON ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS. NO KIDS BY MULTIPLE BABY DADDIES, A WILLINGNESS TO GET WORK, A LIMIT TO HOW LONG THEY CAN LIVE IN PUBLIC HOUSING, AN EFFORT TO GET EDUCATED, A LIMIT ON HOW MANY KIDS WE FUND WITH WELFARE. I AGREE, MORE COPS ON THE STREETS. FORGET THE COPS IN EVERY CLASSROOM, PUT THEM IN EVERY HOUSING PROJECT.
It is horrible to use crimes, or threats thereof, to frighten good people into giving up their constitutional rights and their freedom to be secure in their persons.
Besides, they wouldn't be getting public defenders, the ACLU would come in and bankrupt the city with lawsuits. So, there would be even less money for proper and effective police patrols.
APPEAL.
Your solution is reactionary, shortsighted, demeaning, racist, and as another poster stated, doesn't address the core problems and stinks of Nazi tactics from a time we thought was gone.
PLEASE DON'T PLAY THE NAZI CARD WITH ME. REACTONARY? YOU BET. SHORTSIGHTED? ONLY FOR A LITTLE WHILE UNTIL THIS GETS UNDER CONTROL. RACIST? NOPE. I'M A REALIST. NOWHERE IN MY ARTICLE DID I EVER MENTION RACE OR SKIN COLOR. BUT SINCE YOU OPENED THE DOOR, LET ME SAY THIS. THIS WEEK WE CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON WHERE PEOPLE OF COLOR FOUGHT FOR THEIR RIGHTS TO BE EQUAL PARTNERS IN AMERICA. IT IS INFURIATING AND INSULTING TO THINK THAT THE GRANDFATHERS AND GRANDMOTHERS OF SOME, NOT ALL MINORITIES DIED FOR THIS GENERATION TO SHOOT LITTLE KIDS IN A HALLWAY OVER "TURF" THAT THEY DON'T EVEN OWN!!!!!!!! THEY DIDN'T GET BEAT TO A PULP, WET DOWN BY FIREHOSES, BIT BY RABID DOGS, LYNCHED AND MURDERED FOR THUGS TO TAKE OVER A CITY, STATE OR COUNTRY. AS I STATED BEFORE IF THE PEOPLE CAUGHT DOIN THIS ARE NAMED CASMIR, MARIO OR COLIN, THEN YOU CAN CALL ME A RACIST.
I guess you advocate concentration camps for the good and the bad. I would assume the internment camps that so many AMERICANS of Japanese decent were forced into were okay with you also? The presumption of guilt should rule the land, as long it is only for those of a certain race or ethnic background of course.
NEVER MENTIONED RACE OR ETHNIC BACKGROUND. YOUR OWN BIGOTRY WAS READING INTO THAT. CONCENTRATION CAMPS....NOPE.
Punish everyone, imprison everyone, deny everyone their rights under the Constitution, simply to have a perception of security because you are afraid ---pathetic.
NOT AFRAID, OUTRAGED.
PATHETIC, BABIES BEING SHOT IN THEIR HOMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with 2:11PM.
Something drastic needs to be done.
Everybody is side stepping the real problem here. We have criminals among us beating college kids for cell phones, settling scores with bullets. We need to give these thugs, white, black, purple or green a taste of Philadelphia medicine. The reason they came here is because we are perceived as easy marks.
To call Yonki a racist is insane because no where did he ever mention race. He is saying what Leighton and the fat ass Council should have said long ago, ENOUGH!
And again, look at the arrest records and the connections of all the shooters.
Or should we not publish their names because we'd be called racists? I'm with Yonk, until a Police Blotter says the name Mario or Terrence, you can call me a racist and kiss my brown Hispanic ass at the same time!

WTF ... how is Yonki racist? Are ALL the people in the soup kitchen black? How about that apartment complex are they all black? Pull your head out of your ass my friend and look at the mounting problem. Whenever someone has an idea for a solution, someone always seems to find a problem with it. Maybe it's about time to come down hard on these criminals. It's easy to bitch, but you certainly have no other solutions, except for blaming a larger and larger government. You make me sick with your piddly little bitching. God forbid you'd come up with a solution for yourself. It sure is easier to cut down someone else you have a hard on for. I very rarely agree with Yonki, but that being said, he still has a right to his opinion, and a right to state it. And besides that it's HIS GODDAM BLOG!!!!! So I guess your solution would be, let the poor bastards keep on keepin on, let the shoot those damned litte two year olds, they probably shouldn't have been out in the damn sun anyway.
Just saying.

I grew up at Mineral Springs in the late 80s. It was the only home I knew because my mom and dad split when I was 9. The stigma of living there was horrible but I was taught that if you worked hard and studied, you'd get ahead.
My friends, the blacks, one Jewish kid, one Unitarian, one Greek and a few Italians were looked down on because we were poor. School was tough. Life was tough.
When there was a problem tenant in the building, our moms handled it. (THat was before guns of course).
MY point here is this, no matter hoew hard it was for us, we never, ever, felt unsafe. We never, ever had to worry about bullets while we were in the Springs.
Mr. Yonki and his thoughts are not racist. Because safety is not a race, thing, it's a human thing.
Unlike city leaders who danced around this, someone has finally said what needs to be said. Public Housing is an oppory=unity to do good for your family, (I'm a LPN by the way) or bad. For the kids of today to become "me" in about twenty years, they need to be not shot at in their homes. No matter how humble they might be.
Mr. Yonki, thank you for saying what's real.

At 8:42 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Two things, Yonki made a brilliant rebuttal point when bringing up the fiftieth anniversary of the March on Washington. Martin Luther Kinbg was not kiled to allow young men and women of an color to tote guns and wreck havoc on their brethren in a neighborhood, be it a house or apartment complex. Shit, even the mafia never hit families. So don';t call his rant racist when the poster brought it up. I see Yonki on TV every week and there is no such thing as a code word for him.
Second, look at the people we have had as Mayors. All entrenched political familes with union backing and none having held no real job in the private sector. Save of course for Tom McLaughlin but really that was a family business handed to him like Leighton's was.
We have not had a Mayor who has worked in private jobs. This problem was not solved because it wasn't reaching Barney Farms and it wasn't reaching the homes of the connected.
Maybe Yonki should put down his pen and run for Mayor. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat because people have to get tough. You need someone who will not feel bad after the fact but someone who will do something before it happens.
And btw, with that new ordinance, if drug dealing is going on at Sherman Hills, why not shut it down? Why do they get an exemption? It appears the odinance made Sherman Hills free rein for the thugs to roam and shoot.
And one more thing...look at what the man wrote. He did not say shut down the soup kitchen, he said "suspend" . Big difference.

At 8:52 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay, I need to go back to school. Where do some of the posters get Nazi, Racist and Evil from what David Yonki wrote? Drug testing and audits of who's is who is done in private business all the time.If you live in a condo, you need to get your house inspected, have your lawn a certain way etc. What's the big deal?
Showing proof of residency as well as who is staying with you should be mandatory because the public safety of others is at risk. Sorry, you are living on the public dole. You wouldn't be at this point if the people who are your neighbors kept it real and clean.
Nobody's talking concentration campsa, hatred, bigotry or anyting about those Nazi cats in the 30s.
It's about little girls who can't even comprehend why they are bloody and battered from people who think this is one big ****ing video game.
It has to stop and that ain't nazi, racist, or whatevr you fools are being so hysterical about.

I think what Yonk meant to say was this:
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know My name is the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon thee.

You are correct. This is a war. It is a war from within and there is nothing that says we can't do everything we can to remain safe. Where does it end? THe kids get gunned down in schools and now in their homes!
And to those who say Yonki is racist, the man is more steeped in Black and Jewish history than you will ever be.
His main fault is that he is impatient when the descendents have n regard, knowledge or care of what happened in the 60s.
PEOPLE DIED so that you can live in the same houses as others, go to school as others and drink from the same water fountains as others. As a person who lived through the 60s, saw Dr. King shot down dead like a dog, I understand why Yonk is so pissed.
REPEAT: THis is a war. The good people were not the agresor, the thugs and as Yonk called them, "Turf warriors" started it.

I don't think that's what Dave meant to say at all. Bible quoters usually don't have anything to say.
And you can keep your vengeful god.

Dave,
People don't want to hear possible solutions. They want to piss and moan and bitch about how bad everything has become. The talkers are many, we have some examples in politics and on local radio, the doers are few and far between. A relative lives in a senior complex. She has an annual review where her rent can and usually is increased and monthly spot inspections for cleanliness and safety reasons. She hates the intrusion, but she accepts it as the price she pays to live in an affordable safe environment.

Cops visible on the streets on foot
should patrol these areas in twos. Or after some special urban training put the National Guard on Patrol in cities with problems like
WB and Hazleton.
Or Both, but for everyones sake and our future do something!
The War on Drugs is lost. Legalize marijuana and tax the hell out of it. Use the money to fund these back to basics ideas.
Its better than nothing and a constant police presence is a force against all crime.

Last night I'm watching WBRE and their new reporter Sharon Geeta. She is intervewing a Wilkes Barre resident of color who is talking about the need for tracking who is living in these apartments. Seems to me that she is saying the same thing Yonki advocated in the first place, a type of census as to who is actually living there.
If you take a look at the news story today in the paper, one guy coming in the backdoor, another guy going out the front, I had to read it three times before I knew who was who!
Yonki might be a liberal who advocates social programs but he is one that demands responsibility and accountability from the people getting the benefit.
That is far from racist and you my friend are an idiot. An interesting idiot but one nonetheless.

No one, especially children, should be the victim of gun violence. What happened at Sherman Hills is appalling and disturbing. But here is something to consider: the children are the only innocents in this horrible situation. We have the turf warriors, males(not men) who lack communication skills and rely on guns to speak for them. We have the privately owned apartment complex management, or lack of same. If they had been paying attention, maybe incidents like the one that ended in two children being hospitalized would not happen. But we also have the mothers. Baby daddies evidently come and go at will. It does make you wonder if child support is provided. Maybe it is. In addition to the baby daddies, and often there's a different bd for each child in a home, these women allow unknown men to come and go. You only knew him as "Flea" or "Shaia"? And you let him near your preschoolers? Where is Children and Youth? Must we wait for the next child's death before someone stands up for the innocents. These children live life in the crossfire of so-called adults with no more commonsense than God gave a goose.

WHILE I WAS IN MY 20s, I DATED TWO WOMEN WHO LIVED AT SHERMAN HILLS. BOTH BUILT HOMES FOR THEIR SMALL CHILDREN, ONE HAD A BOY, THE OTHER A GIRL. BOTH LIVED THERE BECAUSE OF A BAD DIVORCE (ONE WAS LEFT ON THE DELIVERY ROOM TABLE AS HER HUSBAND SAID, “SEE YA”,) THE OTHER HAD A BAD DIVORCE. THEY HAD NO OTHER CHILDREN. THE HALLS WERE SAFE AND WHEN THERE WAS A DISPUTRE, IT WAS HANDLED. BY REASON, SHAME AND NOT BY GUNS.
ONE GOT A MASTERS DEGREE IN COUNSELING, THE OTHER HAD A GOOD CAREER AT A UTILITY COMPANY. BOTH OF THEIR CHILDREN GOT COLLEGE DEGREES. WHILE THERE WAS INTERACTION WITH ONE EX HUSBAND, THERE WEREN’T GUYS LIKE FLEA, SHY, MIKE, ED, EARL OR PUFF FREDDIE ROLLING IN AND OUT OF THERE.
I DID SPEND TIME THERE IN A LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY TIME. A TIME THAT SADLY IS NON EXISTENT BECAUSE OF THE BREAKDOWN IN SOCIETY OF MORALS.
SO I DON’T NEED A LECTURE ON SHERMAN HILLS AND WHAT IT COULD BE. I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE AND IF THE MAYOR AND I SPENT A WEEKEND UP THERE, I’M SURE WE’D BE SICKENED AND TEMPTED TO KICK SOME ASS.
BUT THEN SOME PEOPLE WOULD CALL US RACISTS AND GET THE ACLU AFTER US!

Barry who worked for many years at the Post Office walked up to the bar and said hello to me. Yonk was going home, smiled at the pretty lady nursing her drink a few stools from me. . She smiled back. I asked her if she ever dated Yonki seeing that she seemed to be friendly toward him. She said “No, I did not. “
Before she could say anything else, DeRemer jumped back, pointed at her and said, “So you’re the one!” I have no doubt Yonki knows the real estate of apartments in this area better than Century 21.
