The LuLac Edition #2511, September 5th, 2013

Campaign sign for Katsock and Grinaway in Wilkes Barre Area School Board race. (LuLac archives).

GRINAWAY-KATSOCK EVENT

There is a vital fundraiser at the end of this month for two candidates running for the Wilkes Barre Area School Board. Current board member Christine Katsock and Kathy Grinaway will be holding a fundraiser on Sunday September 29th from noon to 4pm. Cost is $15.00 per ticket or 2 for $25.00. It will take place at the Plains Lions Pavilion which is located at Clarks Lane in Plains.
Why is this so important? Well, Katsock (along with a few other board members) who have been trying to deal with the silliness and cronyism that despite three jail sentences, and other improprieties like over billing needs to be put back in office. And Grinaway who is not politically connected and is a concerned taxpayer with two grown children with great futures will be a breath of fresh air on the Board. Why? Maybe it’s because she has worked in the public sector her whole life.
So, if you want another Leighton cousin, brother, son or daughter to get a job with the school district, vote for the guy with the maroon signs.
If you want all that crap to stop, vote for these two.

WILKES BARRE MAYOR’S RACE

Well we were guests on WILK Radio last month talking about the Democratic nomination process for President in 2016 so I guess it’s not out of the ordinary that we write about the 2015 Wilkes Barre Mayor’s race.
My friend L.A. Tarone and I have a debate going on about whether Tom Leighton will run again. L.A. seems to think he will, I don’t. I think the powers that be in the Democratic party will point out that there is a tad bit of baggage and say “Son, you put in your twenty years, take your pension and head into the sunset……until of course we find you a cushy state or federal job where you can come and go as you please. Or better yet, if you want to stick closer to home, how ‘bout that school district?” Wait, you’ll see.
But in the meantime, Bruce Simpson who announced his campaign is getting rave responses since his announcement. On the Republican side, city activist Frank Sorick has indicated he may run on the Republican ticket. Another rumor I’m hearing is that Matthew Robert Sobieski might be a candidate. But there might be an issue as to whether he can serve if elected because of a legal issue. Other candidates rumored to be at least thinking about this are former Police Chiefs Bill Barrett and Tony George as well as a few others I will refrain from mentioning because I have to verify the rumor, if that makes any sense at all.
Democratic candidates for Luzerne County Council at an affair at Lobitz’ in Hazleton. From left to right are Michael Giamber, Renee Ciaruffoli Taffera, Eileen Sorokas and Richard “Kick” Heffren. Linda McCloskey Hauck was at a meeting.

DEMOCRATS ON THE MOVE

The Democrat candidates have not let the green grass of summer grow under their feet. The candidates have been on the move and are touring the County. You’ll see more of these Democrats on the scene.

EILEEN TRIES AGAIN

Eileen M. Sorokas, candidate for Luzerne County Municipal Council, will begin her fall campaign with a Kick Off Rally on Friday September 13, 2013. The free Rally will be held at the Polish American Club, 97 Martin Street Hudson(Plains) Pa. from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. Food and Refreshments will be served. The general election is November 5th, 2013. Please Vote. Eileen M. Sorokas, 14 Hurley Street, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. 570 542-2025. Sorokas barely missed getting on County Council the last time.

ANOTHER SMOKING BAN

I think there needs to be another smoking ban. I truly believe that anyone driving a car or truck should not be allowed to smoke. Here’s why:
1. They litter.
2. Like cell phones and texters, they are distracted drivers. I have nearly been hit by a driver trying to light up, nearly t-boned by an old lady who had smoke so thick she ran a light and tonight, saw a meandering smoker in a truck who took his time but then when the light turned red, sped up and ran it. He did this three times!
3. Their second hand smoke for non smokers who have to ride with them is dangerous.

1976

Frank Sinatra brings Jerry Lewis's former partner Dean Martin onstage, unannounced, at the 1976 Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon in Las Vegas, reuniting the comedy team for the first (and only) time in over 20 years.

Chairman Mao Zedong, of the People's Republic of China, dies……in Pennsylvania there are rumors that Attorney General Robert Kane might be under investigation……..
Jean Marsh, star of Upstairs Downstairs.
and in Pittston, British TV star Jean Marsh, one of the stars of the popular PBS Series “Upstairs Downstairs” helps WVIA TV 44 celebrate their 10th anniversary. A reception is held in the TV studios hosted by General Manager George Strimel and Fundraising Vice President Bill Kelly. WVIA FM’s Libby Smith interviews Marsh on WVIA FM. I was thrilled meeting the TV actress. Also, unbeknownst to me, the future Mrs. LuLac was in attendance but somehow that was not the day we were destined to cross paths…..

and thirty seven years ago the number one song in LuLac land and America was “Lowdown” by Boz Scaggs.

Definately voting for the two ladies and not Ned Evans. Another entitled former educator looking for his next gravy train.
Also loved your '76 wrap up with Dean and Jerry. That was a wonderful reunion. Loved Frank. Great stuff Yonki!!!

Matthew Robert Sobieski????
Wasn't that cat in some sort of legal beef on the West Side in 2008 or thereabouts? Is he Wilkes Barre's Bob Bolus???

I think there should be an additional ban on drinking coffee when driving...reaching down and drinking from that cup is distracting.
Eating burgers/hoagies/doughnuts (which should also be banned because they are not too good for the health)and they are a distraction.
Having young kids in cars as their squawking is a distraction to the driver.
Having irritating passengers who won't shut their mouths---that is a distraction.
ALl car radios/stero systems should also be banned as they are a major distraction...how many times have you been in your home and heard that thumping bass sound that rivals a Boeing 707????
Ban it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bless YOU!

Dave, Great show tonight with Congressman Barletta. You and Tarone did a nice job and I must say that I was very impressed by how reasonable Barletta is on some of the bissues. He seems to be a breath of fresh air when it comes to the current national GOP. Hope I wasn't the only person who saw this!

Barletta was much more reasonable than the President. I was impressed and heartened that he said he would support the President if he only acted. As a Mayor of a city, Barletta realizes you don't put your finger in the wind and then make your decision.
Great show..and you guys behaved for once. Only talked over each other once. You should invite company more often!!

A few things to say this morning,
that Dino and Jerry reunion was something else. I did not know it was Sinatra who put that together.
As for the County Council, I'm going with the Dems like Giamber, Kick, Eileen, Renee, Hawk and maybe Wiilliams if I'm on the fence. Job one has to be to tame Lawton down or light a fire under his ass. I'm hot and cold on the guy.
SAw you guys on TV with the Congressman and it was a great show. Like that little TV station from Hazleton and the high school football but I wish a Fox or even a WVIA would put you guys on. I think you are two of the most knowledgable people on politics.
And Jesus I thought I'd never say this but Barletta made some sense. He should do more interviews.
Boz Scaggs, one of the best artists of all time.
Thanks for showing up every day. More than some of those other slackers do.

The Wilkes Barre Area School Board DOES NOT need another former school employee. Most of them are a joke.
The word on the streets is that newly elected Denise Thomas is going to champion the educational system....after the powers that be find her another job.
And Ned Evans? Forget about him. Another Wilkes Barre Area former educator who will find jobs for his friends just like the rest of them.
There needs to be a change and it has to happen this year.

APPRECIATE THE COMMENTS.....BUT EVERY BLOGGER MAKES A DECISION TO WORK AT THEIR OWN PACE. UNTIL WE GET STAFFS, IT'S UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL.

Speaking of change, there has to b some on County Council. Like the School District's Katsock needs help in Wilkes Barre Area, Eddie Brominski needs some help on County Council. I'm voting straight Democratic.
And I'll swear on a bible on that to make H.H. happy.

Sorry but I just don't trust Lou Barletta. Years ago he was for privatizing Social Security then when it cam e up in his first winning congressional election he supported Social Security and now while serving, he supported Paul Ryan. How many stands will he take? He is like the flavor of the month. I want a guy like Matt Cartwright who has supp;orted all senior progrmas from day one and has not wavered on entitlements. I'm still a believer in the NO LOU FOR ME group. I don't care what he says, I'm only interested in what he does and he does not support seniors...... well, during eleciton time he does but when he gets down the road in Washington, the seniors had better hold on to their hats bcause the big wind Barletta is blowing.

Saw Boz Scaggs this summer. Sollid performer.
Really enjoyed Upstairs Downstairs nd am impressed you had the chance to meet her. WVIA has been such a gift to this area and has always done it right.
And I have to say that given the way the County Council has been chugging along, there needs to be some new blood. I'm going with that team of Dems.
