It’s being reported that Paul McGarry, a long time County Official who had been serving as the Luzerne County director of human resources and administration passed away yesterday after a long illness. His highest title was Director of Probation Services.
McGarry was well known in the Pittston Area and had been associated with County government for the last thirty years plus.
He was a quiet man with a strong presence. I’d see Paul and his wife at the Pittston Diner a few times and hew was always cordial and had some thought provoking opinions. Friends tell me he was a regular reader of LuLac and if that’s the case, I appreciate him classes us a bit. He’ll be missed. Arrangements are pending and I’m sure the local newspapers will have more on his long career in the Human Services, Courts and Administration field. .

David, Thank you for the kind words for my long time friend Paul McGarry. Your correct about his long time affiliation with the county but I'll et there are only a few who know that he was on the ground floor of helping to organize the county union AFSCME Local 1378. He also served as the union steward representing over 130 employees of the Human Resources and Development Department which was the department authorized to administer the federal CETA program.
Paul had a varied carrier, working for a time as the administrator of Hanover Twp, Editor of the Pittston Sunday Dispatch and City Clerk/Administrator of the City of Pittston. Paul began his working life as a teacher in NJ and then in the parochial system in Dunmore.
He was truly a man of many talents and an outstanding friend. I will miss Paul as both a friend and a confidant.
Wil Toole
