The LuLac Edition #3615, October 13th, 2017

13 QUESTIONS

Our 13 Questions logo.

1. The local elections are coming up. Any major predictions?

Not many. You’ll see the Democrats do well in the county Council race in Luzerne County, Bill Courtright will be re-elected in Scranton as Mayor and Gene Talerico will get his first term as DA in The Lac.

2. Did you see that motley crew burning their jerseys in Mountaintop this weekend? Your reaction?

First off, they are veterans so motley they are not. However here’s my take. They have a right to destroy each other’s personal property and never, ever again watch the NFL. Same right as the players who choose to do a peaceful protest. Here’s where I draw the line on the flag issue. If you burn it, that in my mind is vandalism. But silent protest is their right. It was the right those very pissed off veterans fought for.
But when a male football fan says they will never, ever, ever watch the NFL again, I’m not buying it. All you need is something like this to break their boycott.

3. You seem to know a lot about Allentown, where’s a good place to eat there?

You have to get a Yacco’s Hot Dog and you might want to go to Carrabba’s Grille. They make the food in front of you and the chicken dishes are incredible.

4. How do you see the local election turnout this year?

Low. It might not break 30%.
Dismal.

5. You are getting criticized for really going after Donald Trump. When will you stop? Do you fear going the way of Steve Corbett like I read on your comments section?

Steve Corbett did what he did on WILK because that was his job and he had strong beliefs. Like any talk show host, if you are controversial, especially like Corbett, Fred Williams, Kevin Lynn, my buddy Tarone’s hero Bob Grant, you have a shelf life.
To this day I give credit for Steve battling the abject ignorance of all the Hillary haters, both men and women alike who thought they could outwit him. They couldn’t and I’m sure some of them, with their little itty bitty feelings hurt whined to management.
My readership since Trump has gone through the roof. But more importantly my mission since this election is to set people straight when they say something patently false. I do it in social settings, on my blog, everywhere. I don’t care if you think Trump is the greatest thing since slice bread. But when you believe his lies after sputtering about how evil his opponent was, I just ask simple questions that demand an answer. “Why?” “Do you have a reason for that belief?” Usually I get an ignorant response. One day I’ll put up the brilliant retorts from Face book.
In the meantime, when you do something like this, 11 years running now, your expectation is not to be loved but read. That’s happening and I’m fine with it.

6. In terms of health care, where do we go from here?

The Trump administration is doing everything in their power to kill it. Health Care will be nowhere. But in 2018, I’d ask people who want health care reform to NOT vote for those trying to repeal and NOT replace. Vote for a candidate that has an answer. Not bluster and nothing else.

7. Thoughts on the Indians this year?

Naw. I expected they’d choke like they always do. It’s that way when you’re an Indians fan. I didn't even watch that last game, that's how sure I was that they'd lose.

8. Are you as annoyed (maybe not because I remember you as a Humphrey guy) as I am that Richard Nixon is being compared to Donald Trump?

First off, Nixon did damage to the Paris Peace Talks and stopped Humphrey’s momentum in '68. LBJ was a lot like Obama in not blowing the whistle on this treasonous action. Obama certainly did not come out guns blazing with Russia. But I digress.
Robert Redford was interviewed by Esquire last month. He stated and I’m paraphrasing here and agree, that Nixon and Trump cannot be compared. Nixon was on the ballot more times than any other American Politician for national office. He was a Congressman, Senator, Vice President and then President. He may have cut corners and went the wrong way but he had an idea on how things worked. He had a respect for government limitations, even when he was trying to skirt them and the process.
Nixon like Trump?
Exhibit A. Nixon’s diplomacy in China. Trump’s in North Korea.
Case closed.

9. Were you ever called back to WILK Radio to sub?

Nope. I think that was a one time deal. My only regret was I had a few missed opportunities with the callers because of time constraints. Jake and Johnny L. the Board Ops were great to work with. Your average listener has no idea how much goes into going on the air for three hours. It was fun and I appreciated the opportunity. The latest I heard is that Rob was not getting the job and that they might hire former WNEP, WYOU anchor and State Representative Frank Andrews. It is what it is but I was so happy to hear kind words from people still working in the business as well as one retired legend who thought i was a natural for the job.

10. Is Karel Zubris as good looking in person as she is in her Twitter feeds?

Even more so. And her very tall, large and strong husband John would reaffirm my opinion to you if needed.

11. Your gut feeling on why Puerto Rico had less help than other disasters this year?

Logistically it was hard and the power grid was shaky to begin with. But the preparation wasn’t there. We could have used the military to get supplies there and then move them in.
The FEMA Director shaded his reputation a bit the other day by referring to the Mayor of San Juan’s comments as “white noise”. I think the slow response was due to Trump’s feeling that he did enough. I won’t play the race card here but I’m sure others will.

12. The ****** in Chief started calling Bob Corker names. Any comments?

He' s fragile. No one has ever stopped him on anything. He is a man child and quite honestly if he tweeted that he was golfing with Moses, Mohammad, Jesus and Buddah, I’d just not even give it a second thought.
But here’s a tell, when he is wrong and it’s indefensible, he resorts to calling names. Just like his hard core of supporters.
Like I said, man-child.
The funny thing is I bet he couldn’t even turn on a laptop. But we get what we get when we lower standards.

13. Do you plant tomatoes?

No,  but  Mrs. LuLac does and with the humidity and wonderful weather this fall, they are delicious. When I was a little kid, we had a neighbor named Bill McCawley. In late August or early September, Bill would sit on his porch and have a ripe tomato and salt shaker in his hand. I’d look at him on my bike from the street and wondered how he could eat something like that. At that time, my tastes for tomato were pretty much pedestrian.
But now, sans the salt shaker, I know eating a tomato fresh out of the garden is indeed one of life’s little treasures.

Breaking news WILK hires old, white person.
Nancy Kman's demands of diversity from others rings hollow.

Hey WILK, How old can you go?

At 5:43 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So let me get this here thing straight. They by pass Yonk who has 50 years experience in all things media here.
They send a loyal soldier like Rob packing.
Everyday they allow a loudmouth stringer to beat up on Kyle when he takes a day off.
THEN..........
they pick a guy who screwed up being the anchor at the top rated station in the god damn country, not the area but the whole shooting match of a country......what's wrong with ths picture????
Plus Yonk and Rob are only two we know about. What other worthy candidates did they pass by in favor of Rev. Flim Flam?

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "The LuLac Edition #3615, October 13th, 2017":

Frank Andrews??????????????? WTF is WILK going after the one foot in the grave one on a banana peel demographic? After the energy of Corbett and Tarone, and the insight of Rob, WILK has decided to go roll and droll!
If, for whatever reason, they didn't want Rob, there were better options. With young, opinionated and talented people like Freddie and Kyle in house what idiot made this decision? It is bad enough to stab Rob in the back, but Jesus Christ, Kyle this is another act of disrespect thrown at you... get out of that place and move on to a bigger market and a real income.
And if Freddie didnt' want it and Kyle isn't good enough, perhaps, get a little diversity from the old white people hosts and get a Latino or African American. Thank God Bomani Jones is on ESPN radio in afternoon drive, talent and diversity wrapped into one.

At 5:54 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Some say Rob was a tad middle of the road. Not boring but not bombastic.
But he was a veteran who was well rounded.
But he was safe.
So they send the safe guy away. To use a military analogy leaving him on the battlefield.
Then they put a guy on the air who isn't even relevant anymore.

At 6:11 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay.......
is this the guy who messed up being a Democratic State Representative in a Democratic county in a Democratic district?
And they think this is a suitable replacement for L.A. and Rob?
Yonk, Kyle, Rob, Dave D, and whoever else were in the running, this is like way upside down. It's not you man, it's them.

At 8:38 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

For a decade and half Rob was there for them. Vacations, illness, firings, etc.. at a moments notice he came in, and often times, did a better job than for whomever he was sitting in.

Rob gets paid back by a thanks, but no thanks and doesn't even get to have a goodbye show. If they were going to go younger, or ethnically diverse it would make sense, but to hire another old white dude doesn't. And God, Frank is sooo fucking boring.

Yonki, who has been WILK's internet propaganda minister, one who would have made Joseph Goebbels proud. Yonk, who suppressed every and any negative comment, opinion, rumor and fact that was ever attempted to be posted on his blog, was rewarded for his efforts and loyalty the same way the governor thanked him - with platitudes and lip service.

Then,as a previous poster mentioned, there is young Kyle. Yes, every bit the example of a modern man-child, expecting everyone to take care of him, in this case, he actually earned an opportunity. Although I don't agree with much of his leanings, and yes, he he lacks breadth and depth of knowledge, he has talent, and I think he would have grown into a good talk show host, or better yet, pair him with Freddie, and you would have had something younger, under age 54, would have had a reason to tune in.

WILK has done as it has always done, it eschews loyalty, and their management in the form of Nancy Kman and Ryan Flynn have once again, as done to Kevin Lynn and Steve Corbett, thrust a knife into the back of those that have given so much of themselves to station. I know radio is a business, but even from that stand point, Fucking Frank Andrews, makes zero sense.

I think the statement by management was pure bullshit. It is true that Shimkus was a two time anchor and a State Representative.
But wait for it HE SCREWED THEM ALL UP.
Will do the same to WILK.

IN RESPONSE

I did not post rumors about WILK and personal attacks as I perceived them. So we're going nazi on me?
Yikes.
As for Wolf, there are many others who did more for him than me and got screwed over by him in terms of jobs and help.
It comes with the gamble of believing in someone and not having them believe in you on the return.

Not so confident.

Yonki,
This was my first blogfest. I hung back and observed. Of course the big discussion was WILK's choice to replace Louie Tarone.
The talk was funny, bi partisan and welcoming to a newbie like me.
But I was struck by the way the crowd there reacted to you.
Democrats, Republicans, Independent.
They all were glad to see you.
That transfers easily to TV and all media
Too bad WILK decided another alternative.
I'll keep reading, glad to sit back and observe.

Beth

P.S. I was helping the vendors this morning at Worthington. I had to take a call and missed you when you left.
Next time.

So riddle me this, if Yonki is good enough for TV why not WILK. He will continue to show up on WILK during elections and offer his intelligent and informed insight, doing all of the research so the morning duo can bitch about how hard they work and keep yammering for Friday to hurry up and arrive. In any other market Yonk would be compensated for his insight, (edited slightly)

Guests for the most part are unpaid. Plus WILK is not as flush as some people think.
They have a shell of a news department but to their credit it is still a news department. Plus on air staff will do the heavy lifting when big news hits.

Only three stations have a news presence, Magic, Bold Gold with Jim Riley and of course WILK.
But none are fully staffed.

At 11:46 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well whyever they picked him is moot.
But thank you Jesus they didn't listen to the senseless loudmouth callers and FB posters who think they got Corbett and Kevin Lynn fired.
One idiot said about Andrews, "If we don't like him, we'll get rid of him".
Really? These retired bums who have nothing to do all day after getting their discounts at Aldi and jamming up lines in convenience tores with their god damn lottery pick think now THEY are the powers at WILK.
That's why these people, mostly white men hate Nancy so much.
She's not a sweet lil woman who'll fetch a beer, rub their feet and vote for Trump because "my man is smarter than little ole me".
Not to be morbid but this area won';t change until these dumb old coots die off!

Hey 11:46PM

I saw those FB posts on Rob's page. A few thoughts. When these old coots die off, never forget they bred. Their kids are more racist and radical than they are.
You should see the shit they hurl.
ONe guy, a former employee is so illogical, Dr. Spock would have jumped off The Enterprise.
The guy who said "WE control who they hire" only has power if management listens to this loud minority.
They gravitate toward Sue's show and Rob was agreeing with them more and more every day. I think that hurt him.
But to the guy's post, and he did say FB right wingers like him would get rid of Andrews or Yonki or Kyle or anyone else who applied if they didn't kiss their dirty white asses....I just wonder how much they buy and where.
I would love to see a store track the number of people who complain and what they buy.
I bet NOT MUCH.

hey 1:06
There is nothing to boycott when it comes to WILK, unless you are boycotting public service announcements. The station has never been a money maker, it is a loss for Entercom.
Now, if someone wanted to organize a boycott, then they would have to go after KRZ and Froggy advertisers, that is what brings in the money for the cluster.
It will be interesting to see what happens after the CBS/Entercom deal is in place for a while. I am hearing that there will be more unemployed from the ranks.
Andrews is a smart money decision, being both social security and medicare eligible, he is probably only being compensated in the form of a small salary. No healthcare, nor retirement benefits and no SS contributions to pay for and into. I think w/i a year, WILK will be back to one local host, and I am guessing it will be Frank... just a hunch

At 1:49 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nancy is really one the only one who makes sense in terms of this President and the threat to our country.
John cracks wise when she makes a comment, Sue justifies her leanings and then there's Rush.
And the guy at night with the finances, boring.
While Corbett went too far, I'm afraid Reverend Frank will go back the other way too far.
Yonk may be way over the top on Trump but so is 63% of the country.
I wonder if this Flynn fella even took the time to read the LuLac site?
But then when you reduce your news staff locally, you might not recognize local comment if you fell over it.
A nice C&W station on the AM would be nice.
Just saying.

Andrews told the press he was doing it for his family. He has very small kids from what I understand from a second marriage, so maybe there is a health care component.

At 1:56 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:52, that would be interesting. He gets medicare, not sure how that works for employee over 65. He may also be getting from his stint as state rep, think you only have to serve one term to get "retirement" benefits, but I could be wrong.

"Guests for the most part are unpaid."

You're right, but Yonk doesn't show up as a guest, he is a political expert. He provides more insight in the hour or two he spends on the air than the morning show does in an entire year. He should be compensated.

At 2:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This hiring is indicative of this area. WILK management is like the timid business souls that live here.
No risk, no pain.
But I don't think Kyle or Yonk was a risk.
Andrews?
Three plum positions and he can't keep any of them?
In a way it's like the political triple dippers. They fail, they get rewarded.
Kenny Smith doesn't pay his unemployment taxes for his workers? Get a 70,000 plus job.
WILK has adopted that type of policy. Never hire the best or the brightest or exciting, just hire a guy who got another bite at not the apple but the entire orchard.
Same old same old in NEPA.

Hello:
A few comments on all of this. I have been following this blog site for years. While I'm no expert, here are my thoughts.
I started a blog about a year before LuLac began. When I realized how much work went into it, I quit.
Then I decided to write a book. When I saw what was entailed and then when I realized everyone was writing books and I wasn't getting cash advances I quit.
I re started another blog in '09 but stopped when I heard Google was paying only cents a month for content.
This blog has thrived because the author has promoted the hell out of it appearing on stations like WILK. With the media appearances and books, Yonki has gone beyond blogging. It is a must read for everyone interested in politics. So if WILK gives him anything or not, he reaches more people than I ever did.
The issue today is that with the internet content is pretty much free.
By promoting this site, I'm sure he has sold books and branched out into other things.
Which is why I'm puzzled that 9:14AM is concerned about whatever goes on there.
Yonki, the decried Liberal who wants everything free for everybody took an idea and ran with it turning LuLac into something of value. That value is in the eyes of the beholder. But he took a Conservative principle and made it into something everybody was talking about.
As for the books, I understand they sod well for Yonki and that didn't come from nothing, it came from the blog. I know a family in the mid valley has a standing order every Christmas for a multitude of copies to send to friends across the country.
The very fact that we are talking about a radio station he is involved in on whatever basis tells me he built something good by persistence and hard work.
Something I'll admit I never did. And something most of the loudmouth listeners on WILK and posters on this site never did.

At 9:11 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Really didn't give this much attention until reading here and it seems WILK shafted current employees. It is a business, but this doesn't make much sense, passing over a fourteen year, capable, rock solid employee for someone who has been out of the loop for years.
If I was working there I would be updating and sending out my resume.

First off, that family thing is a crock. If he has a disabled child, there are many programs in or state that take care of that. Although maybe he;s afraid of what the big orange a hole has in mind for health care.
State rep pensions, the lawsuits he and his wife filed, just another example of someone getting more.

IN RESPONSE

Okay here are your posts. I edited three words from one post because they were redundant.
I have not been in touch with anyone from WILK since August 8th (the day I was on the air) when Nancy Kman told me she was going on vacation, said I did a good job on the show, told me she was going on vacation but would call me back the week after she got back.
The week she was on vacation I called Sue about the eclipse and we talked about my involvement in the Knights of Columbus and how she loved their clams.
On August 29th I got a message from Nancy asking if I liked doing the show, apologized she didn’t get back to me, wanted to touch base but said she was going through applications. I replied saying that I knew her plate was a full as a Chinese buffet but said she could get back to me when she could.
My mistake but I don’t beg for jobs. I never had to in my entire working career and wasn’t going to start now.
After Labor Day a rumor was floated by a former employee who said Rob was offered the job and took a two year contract at 23 or 24 dollars a day. That translates to about $120.00 a week. The former employee said in this rumor he got the information from the GM who the fired former employee claims he had lunch with. Again this is a rumor which I found wildly entertaining especially about the very paltry sum being offered.
So I checked the WILK website and saw no promotion of a show, just WILK afternoons.
In the meantime, it came to my attention that more than a few advertisers sent e mails or made phone calls on my behalf. These weren’t sex pill hawkers that you hear overnight either. These were quality people who paid. Then on the 18th or 19 of September I sent Kman a letter along with a small package (from UPS in Edwardsville) that contained major brand labels. The final sentence in the letter read “In this little box are examples of brands. I hope we can discuss my “brand” with the WILK brand at your timetable”.
No response since then.
Nothing.
So the very idea that anyone from WILK tried to call me and stifle any of these comments is just absurd. I mean if they didn’t extend any courtesy to a 17 year employee like Rob, why should I expect anything? But the bigger question is, why the hell should you?
Jesus, Years ago there were wild rumors about me and amazon sized women from the Mid Valley! Have I diminished that much in interest? Now the big “whisper” is did WILK call me to shut these posts down? If I didn’t have the hip operation, I’d be rolling on the floor laughing uncontrollably.
That’s the whole story. Anything else you want to know, contact WILK -not me. I think I have been more than transparent in telling you dates, times and places.
That’s all I know. I can’t control what your imagination.
Finally, ask your rumor mongers a question I ask when passed on a rumor and or comment and have to edit. "Who told you that?'

At 10:25 PM, Blogger David Yonki said...

The two comments you see removed were ones I deleted and then re printed because of typing errors. God forbid if you make two typos when you write 100,000 words a week!

At 12:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow!

2 questions if I may.
1. What would you have asked for if you got the job?
2. What plans (and I know you always have a plan) did you have for the show?

At 12:07 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well he didn't even get the chance to be interviewed by the GM?
It seems like almost every job process in this area, the FIX is always in.
This is a prime example!
WILK is just like any other local business here in NEPA.
Honest applicants don't get a hearing and the the three time (uh and I say this with sarcasm) "veteran of local broadcasting" gets still another chance to be a spectacular failure.

At 7:56 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Reading the comments here it doesn't seem like Frank Andrews is a very popular decision, based on small sampling. What gives, did Frank give Nancy a job in radio or tv when she started? It seems at WILK it is kind of inbred. Sue and Nancy were friends, Sue gets job. Tarone and Sue friends, Tarone gets job.

What gives, did Frank give Nancy a job in radio or tv when she started? It seems at WILK it is kind of inbred. Sue and Nancy were friends, Sue gets job. Tarone and Sue friends, Tarone gets job.

IN RESPONSE

I think he was still in radio when she started at WYOU. He went from WNEP to WYOU in that order. By the time he was at WYOU, she was at WILK for many years.

Sue and Nancy were friends, Sue gets job. Tarone and Sue friends, Tarone gets job.

IN RESPONSE

I think someone had the job for a short time before Sue got it. Sue interviewed Kman when she was a reporter for the Voice.
Tarone, and I know this because he told me when he was trying to get in there had to fight every step of the way to get the Sunday show extended.(During the time from 2009 through 2013 when he left WYLN he'd give me updates when we did the Topic A show together)
Then when he got the full time night time job, for months he wasn't even on their website.
Again he literally had to ask many times (now this is what he told me) before he got equal billing there.
Who knows, maybe you just have to keep on asking and asking and asking.........

Just curious, since this topic generated so many comments, what is your analysis of the frank Andrews hire?

I'm way to close to it now to comment but I will. There's are a lot of moving parts and emotions ranging from still trying to come to terms that L.A. is gone and a personal reassessment of where I want to take LuLac.
But I will certainly give you my take before the big debut.

Never knew you tried out and were up for the position.
Do you think the one note theme of your blog lately hurt you? You have basically been an internet version of the guy they fired before Tarone.

IN RESPONSE

No. I'll tell you why. I have found that many people at WILK really don't read this blog. I think the only ones who read regularly were Corbett and L.A. Sue might have dropped by once in a while. When I guested on the shows, they might have checked in.
So they made the hire not based on my blog in my estimation. Hope you could sleep better.
More importantly, I know there are people here who think I am too hard on Trump and those who voted for him. But the fact is I have never made any of this stuff up. It is this President who has given everyone fodder. This is not fake.
Do you actually think I look forward to his shit?
My firm belief and responsibility is to call out who I believe is the greatest threat to the safety and stability of America in or lifetime. Trump is a racist bully who has no knowledge of even the most basic tenants of this government.
I know you say that you didn't vote for him and that my thoughts, strenuous and caustic might drive people away and into Trump's arms.
I really don't care. Let them join the 33% who are blindly supporting this accident.
This is my site. I work very hard to produce something that is widely read and in some circles respected.
I don't need your blessing nor WILK's attention.
This is my venture.
That stated, we both understand that words have power. Plus with the internet these words are out there forever.
Many years from now, if anyone looks at these words, I am confident I will be on the right side of history for bringing attention to the man people entrusted this country to.
That's all I care about.
So as long as this President keeps acting like a supreme sadist who gets joy out of hurting people, I'll be here.
And no job or whatever you think this is costing me is worth capitulating to a danger to the country I love.

Defensive? Jesus Christ, the only reason I was asking was because I thought WILK didn't want to go back to a single subject host.
It was fun watching Corbett melt down with his Melville quest, it isn't so much fun watching your meltdown. Your writing used to be respected, now you are one topic all the time, and your writing borders on paranoid ranting. One can't even ask a simple question without you going into a longwinded diatribe that is off the topic of the question.
Perhaps, you are too thinned skinned for talk radio. Just because people don't agree with you doesn't make them ingrates, ignorant or stupid. You have gone down Corbett's delusional road thinking your way is the only way and the rest of the world is a bunch of idiots.
I voted for Hilary, however, my word didn't end when she lost, you are like Sarah Paulson's character on American Horror Story, unhinged and beyond reasonable conversation.

10:43.....you have been picking this scab for a long time. It is you that is too thin skinned and not really with it.
You charge that all this blog is about is attacking Trump.
Read the content for Christ sakes. Tax relief for Homeowners, 100h anniversary births of famous people, you read what you see.

I understand this person's complaint or whatever. But he framed the question this way..,.Do you think the one note theme of your blog lately hurt you? You have basically been an internet version of the guy they fired before Tarone.

Well what is the complaint in Yonk's answer.
Yonki didn't believe it hurt him because as someone who has been with the WILK people, he most likely knows who reads it and doesn't.
Corbett and Lynn were fired not for their politics but because Corbett's shelf life ran out and there were some pretty wild machinations behind the scenes to get Lynn out. And management approved it.

If Yonki is an internet version of Corbett......again I agree with 8:31 pm who asked people to look at the totality of what he is writing.
When he wrote about the Judicial trials everyday, was he going down a rabbit hole?
Events happen, bloggers opine. Should we have a pie chart?

This is funny. When Yonki puts nothing up about Trump, the Trump supporters bitch.
Then this one who voted for Hillary, says he's ranting when he goes after the guy who essentially stole the election from her.
Either this person should stop complaining or Yonki should stop blogging.
