13 QUESTIONS
1. 2009 RACES, WHAT SHALL WE WATCH OUT FOR?
UP UNTIL THE OTHER DAY, I WAS GOING TO SAY JUST WATCH OUT FOR THE JUDGESHIPS IN BOTH COUNTIES AND THE RACE BETWEEN JILL MORAN AND ANN LOKUTA FOR LUZERNE COUNTY PROTHONOTARY. NOW WITH SKREP AND STEVE URBAN WEIGHING IN ON HOME RULE, P.J. BEST HAS A TIGER BY THE TAIL. THIS WILL BE FUN TO WATCH AND SPECULATE ON. IT WILL BE INTERTESTING TO SEE HOW MUCH MONEY IS RAISED FOR AND AGAINST THE CHARTER IN LUZERNE COUNTY.
2. ON LULAC, HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON TRUMPETING THE YEAR 1964?
45 YEARS AGO FOR THE ARRIVAL OF THE BEATLES, THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT WAS TAKING HOLD, THE BIRTH OF CONSERVATISM WITH BARRY GOLDWATER AND OF COURSE THE 64 PHILLIES.
3. FAVORITE PERSON IN OBAMA CABINET?
TWO. HILLARY CLINTON AND KEN SALAZAR. CLINTON WILL BE AN ASSET TO THE PRESIDENT WITH HER DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND UTILIZATION OF “BILL” AT STATE AND SALAZAR AT INTERIOR WILL BE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR IN TRYING TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT FROM THIS PRESIDENT.
4. THAT CHRIS MATTHEWS BOOMLET WENT SOUTH, DIDN’T IT?
TRUE. I THINK MATTHEWS WAS IN LOVE WITH THE IDEA OF BEING A U.S. SENATOR BUT WHEN HE SAW THE LIMITS TO HIS INCOME, CHANGED HIS MIND. ARLEN SPECTER IS THE BEST U.S. SENATOR PENNSYLVANIA EVER HAD. HE'D BE TOUGH IN A RACE AND I THINK MATTHEWS KNEW THAT.
5. ON THE SAME FRONT, HOW ABOUT CAROLINE KENNEDY FOR THE SENATE?
AS I STATED IN A PREVIOUS LULAC EDITION, I THOUGHT BOBBY KENNEDY JUNIOR WOULD HAVE MADE A BETTER CHOICE. CAROLINE KENNEDY IS INTELLIGENT, A VITAL HUMANITARIAN AND DEFINITELY SENATORIAL MATERIAL. BUT SHE STRUGGLES WITH THE CHARISMA THAT WAS GIVEN IN SURPLUS TO HER LATE FATHER AND BROTHER. SHE CAN’T SEEM TO CONNECT AT A “REGULAR GUY AND GAL” LEVEL AND TRUTH BE TOLD THAT HURTS. SHE MAY GET THE NOD BUT PUT HER UP AGAINST A “HAIL FELLOW WELL MET” LIKE ED RENDELL AND AS A CANDIDATE, SHE’D BE TOAST.
6. FAVORITE POLICE DRAMA?
LAW AND ORDER, ALL GENRES, HILL STREET BLUES, THE SHORT LIVED BOOMTOWN AND THE OLD UNTOUCHABLES.
7. HOTTEST ITEM AT THE OBAMA SWEARING IN?
HATS.
8. READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
MRS. LULAC GOT ME THREE POLITICAL BOOKS FOR CHRISTMAS. SHE FEELS I SHOULD START READING MORE AND WRITING LESS. WHAT A COMMENTARY ON THE BOOKS AND THE BLOG. SHE GOT ME TWO BOOKS BY DAVID PIETRUSZA, “1960” WHICH FOLLOWS JFK, LBJ AND RICHARD NIXON. THE OTHER ONE WAS “1920 THE YEAR OF SIX PRESIDENTS”. THE LATTER CHRONICLES TEDDY ROOSEVELT, WOODROW WILSON, WARREN HARDING, CALVIN COOLIDGE, HERBERT HOOVER AND FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT. FASCINATING READING. I CAME AWAY WITH MORE SYMPATHY FOR WARREN HARDING, MORE RESPECT FOR HERBERT HOOVER AND GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT FOR WOODROW WILSON WHO WAS A VERY PETTY AND DISAGREEABLE LITTLE MAN.
9. FAVORITE SUPERMODEL OF ALL TIME?
ELLE MacPHEARSON AND KATHY IRELAND.
10. FULL OR HALF MOON?
FULL.
11. WINE OR BEER?
CAN’T HAVE EITHER DUE TO THE CHEMO BUT WHEN I’M THROUGH, I’LL GRAB MYSELF A COLD COORS LIGHT. WINE: GERMAN REISLING. CHILLED.
12. ANY GOOD THING TO SAY ABOUT PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH?
WRONG MAN AT THE WRONG TIME. A DISASTER. BUT I CAN SAY, AS I HAVE IN PREVIOUS EDITIONS THAT EVERY CHRISTMAS HE STAYED AT CAMP DAVID OR THE WHITE HOUSE SO HIS SECRET SERVICE DETAIL COULD SPEND TIME WITH THEIR LOVED ONES.
13. WITH A NEW ADMINISTRATION AND BIN LADEN STILL NOT CAUGHT, WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO SMOKE HIM OUT?
I WOULD GET MY GOOD FRIEND CARL BRIGIDO FROM WILKES UNIVERSITY’S SHELBOURNE TV CENTER TO RIG A GIGANTIC SOUND SYSTEM THROUGHOUT THE SUSPECTED BIN LADEN HIDING PLACES AND CRANK UP TO THE HIGHEST VOLUME THIS OLD TV THEME.

Oscar winning Walter Brennan as Grandpappy Amos is cruel irony brought to life. Sad to say, I remember the show like it was last month. Loved it but would freely admit it was total drivel. Crenna and Nolan both went on to decent careers. Nolan was the prez of SAG for a long time.
Agreed on Law&Order. I am guilty on all counts. I so wish we could get a full rerun from the earliest days on from A&E. I need to see the pilot and every show from at least the first three seasons again, including Sorvino's one season on L&O. (FWIW, I can ID most every episode within seeing thirty seconds of it.)
Chris Matthews might have realized that Specter is close to unbeatable and decided to wait things out for a bit. That being said, the money issue is most assuredly a player in this. Matthews is likely good for a quarter million easy when you take it all into account.
2010 will be big, Dave. Lots at stake. I do believe you will see some local names in statewide races. I can think of several possible scenarios.
Sorry about you being in the "No Booze Zone." Life without a couple beers simply ain't fun.
I do hope you're well. We really could use some Chinese. Soon, I say, very soon...
Guess the Council was planning to just discuss raises. They bagged the discussion when they saw the fire in peoples eyes! The fact remains, consideration even the thought of raises at this time was an insult to all the hard working people of Scranton. How can politicians get so out of touch?

How can politicians get so out of touch?
IT'S A FINE LINE. I THINK THE MAYOR OF SCRANTON IS UNDERPAID AND THE COUNCIL PEOPLE ARE OVERPAID. THE TIMING THOUGH WAS NOT RIGHT. TOO MANY POLITICOS TALK TO THEMSELVES AND NOT THE PEOPLE THEY REPRESENT. THE WAY THIS THING WENT DOWN WITH COUNCIL, IT WAS APPARENT THEY (COUNCIL) WEREN'T EVEN TALKING TO EACH OTHER!

DOING OKAY. THEY EXTENDED THE CHEMO BECAUSE I'M TOLERATING IT SO WELL. KIND OF LIKE GIVING AN A STUDENT TWO MORE COURSES TO HANDLE BECAUSE IT'S FUN TO WATCH HE OR SHE DO WELL!! GEE THANKS. I APPRECIATE YOUR WELL ROUNDED RESPONSES ON 13 QUESTIONS. WELL THOUGHT OUT. THANK YOU. AND YES, THE REAL McCOYS WAS DRIVEL BUT IT WAS ON ONE OF THREE NETWORKS AND WE THOUGHT IT WAS THE GREATEST THING SINCE SLICE BREAD. I REMEMBER MY DAD SAYING ABOUT BRENNAN, "HE WAS IN THE LOU GERHIG STORY, BOY DID HE FALL FAST!" BUT WALTER WENT ON TO COLOR ON ABC WITH "THE GUNS OF WILL SONNET". THERE WAS CASH FOR ACTORS IN THOSE EARLY TV DAYS.
Kathy Ireland!! Good pick!
Agree with L&O- The original is my favorite w/Jerry Orbach & Jesse Martin. You could actually tell that Martin appriciated Orbach at the end... Despite the Warren Commission, Arlen is a great Senator, acting on what the voters want, regardless of the party line... No Kennedy in NY State- Andrew Cumno(sp) is the Newyorker's choice... Luzerne County politics- At this point, any new face with valid points will have a good choice to be elected considering the bad press under the dome...

Walter Brennan, "That Mule Old Rivers and Me". Remember? It was pretty good!
Pittston Bob
the original starred George Dzunda
and Chris Noth as the cops. Michael Moriarity was the Deputy DA and his assistant was Richard ? Brooks? Nobody was ever better than Orbach.
Moriarity could turn calling someone "Sir" into an insult on the stand! Sam Waterston has been great and his assistants have all been excellent. Great Show over the long haul.
Look forward to your review of '64 as we progress through '09. The chokin' phils would give the '07 and '08 mutts a run for their money. so thank goodness for the heir apparent all time chokers..the mutts...and yeah yeah yeah 64 did introduce the lads to us.
