Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War.
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic.
In 1915, inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields," Moina Michael replied with her own poem:
We cherish too, the Poppy red
She then conceived of an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends and co-workers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need.
The bottom line is this: we appreciate the valor of all of our troops, but Memorial Day should be remembered exclusively as a day to honor those soldiers that never came back. They gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Memorial Day should honor all who served and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Those who served in harms way and survived in many cases left something behind that stays with them forever.
Memorial Day should honor those who died first and foremost and also those who showed up and stood up for Our Country. All Soldiers are not heroes, but all Heroes first reported for duty.

Too bad Barack Obama is too busy going on vacation to bother putting the wreath on the graves of the fallen. Can't think of another president who did the same. Well, we're just lucky that he's sending that baffoon they call a vice president to stand in for him. NOW MR. PRESIDENT "THAT'S A BIG ****ING DEAL!"
Sadly they all sent standins at one time or another. Its a disgrace and this time in the middle of two wars. What could be more important this year, Mr President?
What could be more important? How abut just being president? Regardless of what Obama does, you jokers will still find fault. A note to Pete ......... there is a holiday that honors all members who served and survived, it's called Veteran's Day. Memorial Day is special as it is set aside too honor only those who paid the ultimate price and that's the way it should be.
1:54 Thanks for the info. I'll check on that Holiday, but last time I looked I didnt find it too satisfactory since I always got to work on Veterans Day while the other jokers who did not serve got the day off! My point was that for many a part died and was left behind. I know its hard to understand without experience.

You bet, this joker for one definitely finds fault with the man. It seems he just wanted to see if he could get elected president, now it's like "OK, so I made it, now what." Also... while we're one the subject, it seems to me that YOU JOKERS can't find any fault at all with Obama. You and ABC.
Leave the friggin politics out of this. No president in our history took more days off on vacation than George Bush. Face the facts, the president regardless of who he is will never be on a true vacation. He simply moves his office.
As a veteran, I am offended that there are those who want to detract from the true purpose of Memorial Day. Read a friggin book and learn something about our history. Memorial day is a day to honor our fallen military and Veteran's Day honors all who served. Learn the differnce and then go sit in a corner and shut the hell up. If your feelings are hurt becuase you're a veteran and feel you should be honored on Memorial Day then you shoulld have given all .... you didn't so screw you!
