HANLON MIRABITO GEARING UP

Even though the political waters seem still, local candidates are making the rounds at summertime community events and festival. Luzerne County Common Pleas Court Judge Molly Hanlon Maribito is doing such a thing. She has been seen out and about throughout the county this summer.
With the summer season ebbing, planning for the fall campaign has also kicked into gear. A volunteers' meeting for Molly's campaign on Monday, September 12, at the Swoyersville's American Legion on Shoemaker Street. Doors will be open at 5 PM with light refreshments being served. Meeting will begin at 5:30. Campaign signs and other media materials will be available
Hanlon Mirabito is endorsed by the Luzerne County Police Chiefs Association, Wyoming Valley Fraternal Order of Police and the Hazleton Fraternal Order of Police.

ON THE BUS

Candidates for Luzerne County Council have been boning up on the issues. A major one is the gas drilling concern voiced by many residents. Scott Cannon hosted an information tour on July 31st. I was invited to the event but the wheels were giving me some major problems. But County Council candidates went on the tour and gave their reasons for their participation. Here’s Scott Cannon’s video.

S&P A FRAUD

Well Standard and Poor have now terrorized the financial debate in this country for one simple reason. BECAUSE THEY COULD. Just like the U.S. Supreme Court tilted the Presidential election of 2000 to George Bush, S&P is hellbent on destroying what is left of the Obama Administration. First off S&P are not the only bond raters in town. There are two others that did not rush to a snap judgment that was solely based on politics. S&P downgraded the credit rating of the United States because they were dismayed at the political unwillingness of all concerned in the bogus debt ceiling debate to reach a resolution. Their assumption is based that in the future, our credit will continue to be bad because of the political debate regarding the ceiling. Notwithstanding the fact that as traders were heading for the hills on Wall Street today, they all were seeking refuge in U.S. Government bonds which is regarded as the safest investment. Their cry of wolf is also erroneous because tax revenues have not dried up, there is an income stream. We can pay our bills. S&P are the people who have now downgraded our credit rating for the first time in our history. Is it spite because the Treasury Department said they made a 2 trillion dollar mistake on Friday? How can a company with 1200 employees and only 100 financial analysts understand the entire length and breadth of the U.S. economy as it relates to the world? These are the same people that had no clue as to what Enron was doing, who stood by Lehman Brothers insisting that they were “Grade A” right up until the time they went belly up and who missed the prime mortgage debacle. They didn’t even see that one coming. By releasing an “opinion” S&P seems to want to bring our economy to its knees. Are we to trust an organization that has been so wrong in the last decade? Exactly what is their angle? Do you think it is to unnerve those people who want to invest and rebuild America? There are many people saying the actions of Standard & Poors was unpatriotic. That’s way too kind. Their actions have been treasonous and they should be rounded up and arrested.

HUGH AND MARK

Two politicians of note died over the weekend, one a Democrat, one a Republican. Hugh Carey, former Congressman and two term Governor of New York passed away the other night. Carey was the Governor who worked with then President Ford into rebuilding the credit of New York City and put it on solid financial footing. It was a classic case of a Democratic Governor working with a Republican President. Carey used his association in Congress with Gerald Ford (prior to the both men stepping up to the Executive level) to get Ford off of his famous “Ford To New York: Drop Dead” stance. Mark Hatfield came to the Senate in 1966 as a solid Republican who was opposed to the Vietnam War. Even though Hatfield served as Republican National Chairman and was seriously considered as a Vice Presidential candidate for Presidents Nixon and George Herbert Walker Bush, Hatfield worked very closely with anti war Democrats like Ted Kennedy, George McGovern in trying to stop the madness that was Vietnam. Later on Hatfield worked with Democrat John Kerry in getting needed assistance for post war Vietnam vets. My point in bringing up the passing of these two men is simply this: They worked with their political opposites because they cared about the overall impact the issue would have on Americans instead of to their own narrow reelection chances. Were they criticized and vilified by their own parties? You bet. But they did something in their tenure that the majority of members of Congress can’t or won’t do today, work with each other. If you wonder why Congress has a 82% disapproval rating, it’s because guys like Hugh Carey and Mark Hatfield aren’t there anymore. They’ve been replaced by empty suits that only speak from the script handed to them by the special interests and not their hearts and gut.

You continue to show a dismaying lack of awareness of the definition of treason. It's NOT anything that you believe harms the interests of the U.S.

I agree with the webmaster. Obama needs to get a little Truman into his soul and go cross country lambasting S & P.
He needs to rid himself of handlers.
To be honest, most politicians need to do that. The irony is, if a politician spoke from the heart--sensibly of course, and left the handlers behind, he would see his popularity skyrocket.
Bill Clinton possessed an ability to adapt to any crowd---Obama lacks this ability. It's not his fault, as very few politicos possessed Clinton's gift.
But can he at least try???
He gave some rousing speeches in 2008.
Pres. Obama, the campaign starts now!
Start giving those speeches, start speaking from the heart and not the teleprompter.
Out the vermin for who they truly are.
THen, only then, will you stand a chance of regaining the high ground.

Looks like your pushing Molly, too bad!
S&P shold be arrested for treason. These are the same ***holes who certified Sheerman as triple A right up to the month before they filed bankruptcy. They alos gave the garbage mortgage packages the same AAA rating. Something dreatic shold be done to them and done right now!

Students, I understand the sentiments which accompany the loss of Mr. Carey and Mr. Hatfield.
However, we must remember that expressing points of conduct which are falsities is wrong--dead wrong.
Mr. Hatfield was a Republican, true. Mr. Hatfield was also a liberal.
Back in his day the Senator had much company in his own party of Republicans in name only. Amongst them, Sen. McMathias of Md., Sen. Javits of NY, Sen. Scott of Pa. and Sen. Heinz also of Pa. to name just a few.
What we fail to understand is that many Republicans came to the thinking of Ronald Reagan:
"I didn't leave the Democrats, they left me."
Well, class, the Republicans under Reagan began to understand that the above senators I have mentioned were a detriment, not an asset to the party.
For what would be the point of a political party if it were comprised of various all around the chalkboard philosophies.
Today we have a more succinct GOP--as the Democrats have a more succinct party also.
Americans have choices in elections. One of the reasons Mr. SPector went to defeat in the primary two years ago was his betrayal of GOP principles and the disgust at Democrats of having him in their tent. Both parties disdain those who go against their grain.
Now the American people have chosen conservatism over liberalism. The final closing on this deal will occur in 2012 when mass numbers will come out in snow, sleet, rain, hurricane winds to elect Governor ROmney as our next leader.
ANd then we will finally, with all the wheels of govt. in one parties hands, finally see the end of gridlock and the beginning of sensible economics.
Have I made may point, youngsters????
Class Dismissed!!!!!!!

No jerko, you didn't make a oint, you seldom do. Romney destroyed more companies in the name of rofit that you are capable of even imagining. But notto worry, you will soon see TV ads with regular people telling their stories of how Romney borke up their coanies and sold it off in pieces for profit. Just like a move of the recent past. You are dismissed!!!!

Professor, although I was not a fan of Pres. Reagan I have to acknowledge that as President many things were accomplished during his presidency. I disagree with your non- fact based analysis. His accomplishments were made through compromise. Both he and Democrats and Republicans in both Houses of Congress worked together to govern, unlike what is happening today. The senators you mentioned along with most other members of Congress believed they were elected to govern back then. They were not captives to party or ideology as you wrongly suggest they should be in your post.
I know that you don't look at history, but if you did you would not make outrageous statements like our government would be better off in the hands of one party. We live in a diverse country and one party does not encompass the values and beliefs of all! By the way, we are still waiting for an answer. No longer your student. Your class has been canceled.
