The LuLac Edition #1719, August 14th, 2011

PHOTO INDEX: LUZERNE COUNTY COUNCIL CANDIDATES KATHY DOBASH AND EDD BROMINSKI.

WAR OF WORDS

A former County Commissioner and a community activist, both candidates for Luzerne County Council are going at it. Edd Brominski takes issue with the fact that Republican County Council candidate Kathleen Dobash is visiting county row offices and getting the lay of the land. Brominski contends she’s jumping the gun and should wait until she is elected. Dobash contends this is part of the education process as a candidate. In an otherwise quiet County Council race, this stands out as the highlight of the summer. Whether it is a portend of things to come is only speculative at best. But there is a war of words and it has begun.
Editor:
I would like to pose a question to our county leaders, the commissioners, as to what right does K. Dobash have to go through the courthouse raising questions to the employees regarding jobs?
She is only a private citizen who happens to be one of 22 people who have a chance to become a county council member.
What if every citizen of Luzerne County decided to do what she is doing?
I suggest the commissioners would find a way to end that practice. Not only is she campaigning in the court house, but she gets publicity doing it with the news media.
Using the excuse that she wants to see government in action smells.
Why did she not visit the courthouse years before to learn the operation of the system?
If she is elected, she will have the right to address the different departments and their operations through the council chair. Until then, I urge the commissioners to stop her politicking and taking up the time of the county employees with her drivel.
If it continues, I suggest all candidates, not only those for county council, but every candidate in the county for every office, be afforded the same exception she receives, so they also can see our government in action and waste more of the employees' time.
With disgust, I am ...
Edward A. Brominski
County Council Candidate

Editor:
I am writing in response to Mr. Brominski's criticism of me printed in the Times Leader on August 11, 2011. Mr. Brominski served as county commissioner from 1980 to 1983 and assessor from 1992 to 2000. It is important for this county to heal from the recent investigations and trials in regard to the abuse of power and theft of tax dollars.
As a candidate I am trying to learn as much as possible about Luzerne County government. I believe it is important to start a new term on January 2, 2012 with a thorough understanding of the transition process and how the offices are currently managed. This election we will have a chance to elect people to keep government transparent. Citizens should not be afraid to ask questions. I have the right as a private citizen and as a county council candidate to ask questions. I have submitted right to know requests to gather information about projects and our county debt.
I visit offices after scheduling an appointment to receive first hand understanding of the issues and challenges facing the employees, elected officials and taxpayers of Luzerne County. It is my understanding during Mr. Brominski's time in public service he took the Fifth Amendment when asked about a criminal investigation? I know Mr. Brominski did nothing before, during, or after his term to correct Luzerne County corruption practices. Did you stand alongside Controller Steve Flood when he spoke out about improper procedures and practices? Mr. Brominski appears to lack the energy, knowledge and drive over the last three decades. Why criticize me for initiative and interest?
End your silly attack on other candidates and gain some knowledge about the changes. As a former teacher you should be ashamed of your behavior to criticize my effort to best educate myself about this important new direction for our county.
There is no place for ignorance or criticism of others seeking knowledge.
By, the way, all Luzerne County Council candidates can receive a folder of information from the Luzerne County Director of Human Services. Just call and make an appointment.
Sincerely,
Kathleen (Kathy) M. Dobash
Luzerne County Council Candidate and Private Citizen
NOTICE: I will be more than happy to post any and all comments on this issue. I will however edit any remarks that are degrading and defamatory to Ms. Dobash and Mr. Brominski appearance.

Brominski is absolutely correct about Dobash wasting the time of county employees and managers. There are 22 Democrats and Republican candidates and several other Third Party Candidates. Can you imagine the bottleneck created if all 27 or 28 candidates decided to "Learn" about government by intruding on their work day? Dobash needs to read the Charter and when she does, she will learn that she has absolutely nothing to do with the running of county government. The Council's only chore and responsibility will be to "legislate", not manage county government. If she needs to know what each office does, she can pick up a copy of the Third Class County Code and educate herself without disturbing the work day of county employees. Mr Brominski is right when he asked the question about other county citizens invading the court house to ask questions and observe the workday of employees. Kathy Dobash citizens Mr. Brominski for not uncovering corruption but she forgets that the FBI didn't uncover corruption during his days in office so why does she think Mr. Brominski could have? The only thing Mr. Flood did that is noteworthy was question the juvenile facility lease and that sorely needed criticism. But that happened under the reign of Vonderhide, not Brominski. Let's not rewrite history Ms. Dobash, things a bad enough without adding fantasy facts. IF she really wants to find fault, why doesn't she criticize her good friend Commissioner Steve Urban who sat through all of this and never complained till someone else uncovered a wrong doing. I suggest that Kathy Dobash campaign on her personal credentials and accomplishments and if she has none then she should just run on a promise to try to do a good job. As for Mr. Brominski, there is no candidate with a more burning desire to right what is wrong with Luzerne County government, just spend 5 minutes speaking with him, I did.

I hear Herman Cain is going to start making the rounds at the White House....
This type of action has made me reconsider my vote. I voted for Dobash in the primary based upon what she had to say. Now she is acting like nothing more than Walter G and worse Carolee, I kept my first husband's name and hyphenated my new husband's last name (btw what kind of wimp is he?)
I will NOT be voting for her in the general election. I thought she was genuinely interested in public service, not self-serving grandstanding.
Thank you for exposing this Mr. Y.

I was wondering, can I as a private citizen begin making appointments with all the government offices and conducting interviews with employees regarding operations? I am not currently running for office but I am thinking about it and some familiarity with county government would be helpful in making my decision.

Two quick comments on this:
1. Kathy Dobash comes to every meetnigs, complains of candidates "rubbing elbows" (as she says) with county officals, and then does the EXACT THING SHE COMPLAINS OF! It's either hypocrisy, or she simply doesn't understand that she's doing the very thing she complains of.

2. Under the Charter, county council candidates must "not interefire with the day affairs of county govt.". Well, Kathy, that's exactly what you are doing as a candidate. Stay out of their way, it's not your role.

Congrats to ex governor Pawlenty on a successful campaign.
One of the best in years.

Dobash is wasting the time of county employees because she has zero chance of being elected in November. She has NO experience whatsoever that qualifies her for such a position.

Looks like people have a feel for the candidacy of Kathy Dobash. By the wya, I agree with every word that Commissioner Steve Urban has done little but collect a pay check. He is quick to jump on the bandwae when sombody else unncovers a wrong but he himself has done absolutely nothing. It was Urban who shut down Moon Lake and he spent much time harassing the Moon Lake staff when it ws operating and the worst fault he could find was a trash can that needed to be emptied. God job URban, you keep your eye on those trash cans and their full, call somebody to empty them. Phony!

Perhaps the office-holders could hold general information sessions to be attended by anyone, including all candidates.

KD has lost my vote. I voted for her in the primary thinking she was different, I guess I was wrong.

Students,
When I think of the clowns and the ultimate managerial ring master who will occupy this new form of govt. come January, I can only surmise that Luzerne Cty. is going to rival Barnum and Bailey as the biggest circus operation in the world.
Need I say more??
Oh, yes one more thing. You all bought the tickets!
Please, please, please....I cannot emphasize this enough---get to your studies; do your homework, read up on all politics local and national.
I suggest publications such as National Review and The Weekly Standard for starters.
As for your local knowledge, you must do that yourself....ask these candidates intelligent questions. Most of your experience will be akin to asking a llama or an elephant the same question (you'll receive a similar response).
Luzerne County may have its flaws and there are many....students, sit back (as you usually do) and see what flaws we have in about three years.
No wonder the FBI has taken up a permanent residence.
Something to think about this morning.
Class Dismissed!!!!!!!!

Kathy Dobash is being promoted on Sue Henry and Steve Corbett by Charlie Hatchko and of course he also pushes Libertarian Mullen. Hatchko is too dumb to realize the he is pushing for Mullen but Mullen is pushing his fellow Libertarian candidates. Talk about a ship of fools with Charlie "Bible Buck" Hatchko as the Captain. What a crew, nuts, dummies and phonies. Did I mention hypocrites?
