The LuLac Edition #2544, October 26th, 2013

DEMOCRATS UNITED

In a LuLac photo exclusive, here's a picture of the Democratic ticket taken in Avoca the other night. From left, Eileen Sorokas, Richard "Kick" Heffron, candidates for Council, Michelle Bednar, candidate for Luzerne County Controller,  Linda McClosky Hauck, Mike Giamber and Renee Ciaruffoli Taffera Council candidates.
Democratic party slate card all set for upcoming election.

After a shaky start out of the gate, it appears the Democrats in Luzerne County are united and loaded for bear in the upcoming election. The Democratic candidates have been running individual and collective campaigns. The Accountability team of Giamber, Heffron, Ciaruffoli Taffera were joined by Eileen Sorokas.  Sorokas who nearly made the cut on Council the last time has been busy running from community to community in her efforts. While Democrat incumbent Linda Houck has been running on her own and might have opposition just by being an incumbent, a Democrat is a Democrat in some minds here in LuLac land.
At the start of the campaign, the Council candidates seemed to have been ignored by the party. As a matter fact, the party made no formal endorsement but the group soldiered on and there are those who say they are in striking distance of a victory. Make no mistake, any election is not a sure thing but it is comforting to have a cohesive  group going into an election. It’s not make or break but it’s like chicken soup when  you are battling a cold, it sure can’t hurt!

Our 1963 logo.

The tenth month of 1963 saw the 1000th day of John F. Kennedy’s Presidency. It was also the one year anniversary of the Cuban Missle Crisis that nearly saw world wide destruction. Here are other events that happened 50 years ago this month:
The President's Commission on the Status of Women issues its final reports to President Kennedy...... Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed pitcher Sandy Koufax sets a World Series record by striking out 15 New York Yankees in a 5-2 victory in Game 1 at Yankee Stadium. The Dodgers sweep the series in four straight, with Koufax defeating the Yankees 2-1 in Game 4 at Dodger Stadium.

1963 Honduran coup d'état: A violent coup in Honduras pre-empts the October 13 election, ends a period of reform under President Ramón Villeda Morales and begins two decades of military rule under General Oswaldo López Arellano.
Hurricane Flora, one of the worst Atlantic storms in history, hits Hispaniola and Cuba killing nearly 7,000 people.....Sam Cooke and his band are arrested after trying to register at a "whites only" motel in Louisiana. In the months following, he records the song "A Change Is Gonna Come".

In northeast Italy, over 2,000 people are killed when a large landslide behind the Vajont Dam causes a giant wave of water to overtop it......The Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, signed on August 5, takes effect.....The second James Bond film, From Russia with Love, opens in the UK.......A revolution starts in Radfan, South Yemen, against British colonial rule.
Alec Douglas-Home succeeds Harold Macmillan as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Demolition of the 1910 Pennsylvania Station begins in New York City, continuing until 1966...and the number one song in America and LuLac land 50 years ago this week was"I Can't Stay Mad At You" by Skeeter Davis.

Except for Bednar, Houck and Sorokas, the Democratic ticket is horrible. Those three shouldn't be in charge of a corner store, let alone making decisions for the county. They've already violated ethics laws by planning on who to fire/hire once they get there, as though their sham candidacies are already a lock. If they are, God help us all! These people are vindictive, slimy, retaliatory and they all reek of natural gas... natural gas money, that is. F*ck them!

Democrats united? No way. Sorokas may have drank the kool aid with that billboard stunt with them, but Houck is too smart to let her presence with them be anything more than a photograph. She knows that these people are absolutely toxic to the party and to the county.

I'm disappointed that the Democratic Committee didn't stand their ground and caved by puting out those slate cards. The bright side is that I'll bet that most of the committee people will toss them in the nearest dumpster as soon as they're issued, or make judicious use of a pair of scissors and clip out certain candidates. If they go through with supporting these candidates, union support is gone, liberal support too. They're alienating a big chunk of their base with these three, all for Brominski's quest for ego and power. At least a few of the higher ups are refusing to cooperate, and I appreciate those people who are taking a stand for their principles.

But if Brominski's ticket wins, then those people are going to be at the top of the list for political revenge, and they'll be in for quite a screwin'. It makes me respect them more, because they're sticking their necks out and taking a big risk by opposing Heffron/Giamber/Taffera/Sorokas(?), because if they fail and those three get in, everyone who so nobly stood on principle will be pushed out of power and party, probably in a less than friendly way, and will likely never be elected/re-elected again. They are either very brave or very foolish.

Bednar is a great candidate and will make a fine Controller. I'm voting for her and wish her luck. The only thing is that I'm concerned that she isn't hitting Olenginski hard enough on her unearned taxpayer funded paycheck or any of the numerous articles that detail Olenginski's rantings that should for all purposes render her unelectable. Jackie Musto Carroll didn't respond to or counter Stefanie Salavantis's attacks, and look what happened to her on election night. Beaten by a child. Bednar should learn from this and force Olenginski to the ropes and make her answer for her antics as Protho.

People get the government they deserve. If they vote for the "accountability" ticket (really the "accountable to no one but ourselves and Brominski" ticket), then the public is pretty darn dumb, and they deserve every bad consequence that will result from the decisions that ticket makes on the County Council. As for Carolee M. Olenginski, I gotta say I used to respect her quite a bit, but now, she seems to have gone off her rocker with that Lawton business and really embarrassed herself. The GOP parachuted her in at the last minute to try to keep the Controller's office, but who knows if it'll be enough. If Olenginski wins (not voting for her, but if she does), I wish her luck because she will DEFINITELY need it.

IN ORDER TO GOVERN, ONE MUST RUN. HAUCK AND SOROKAS HAVE CHOSEN DIFFERENT PATHS BUT EILEEN IS NO KOOL AID DRINKER.
AND AS FAR AS THE PARTY'S UNHAPPINESS WITH THE ACCOUNTABILITY TICKET, WHY DID THEY NOT GET OFF THEIR ASSES AND RUN ANYONE ELSE IN THE PRIMARY? KIND OF LATE TO TUT TUT ABOUT THAT NOW.
AND AS FAR AS BROMINSKI SUPPORTING PEOPLE, WHY NOT? LAST I CHECKED, THIS WAS AMERICA.

David - the Charter prohibits Councilman Brominski from throwing his political weight around in very specific ways. Brominski and his ticket are violating their precious charter.

From the Luzerne County Home Rule Charter:

N. Political Activity
1. Employees shall have the right to hold membership in a political party, to vote, to
express publicly or privately opinions on political subjects and candidates, to maintain
political neutrality, or to otherwise participate in political meetings and activities.
Employees must engage in all such activities as private citizens, away from County
workplaces, out of uniform and during non‐working hours, except union officers in the
normal conduct of union activities.
2. No Covered Person shall use the authority or influence of his or her office for the
purpose of interfering with the result of an election.

While he (or someone else) edited his letter for your page, on Gort42, the original copy exists, and it was signed:

"Edward A. Brominski
Luzerne County Council Member"

Not "Edward A. Brominski", which is how it would need to be signed in order to be in compliance with the Luzerne County Charter. I have screen captured images of both letters from Gort's and your page to document the difference. A small but significant difference which is the line between breaking the county charter or complying with it.

It is a blatant violation. I suppose there's one set of rules for Brominski and his ilk and another set of rules for everyone else? The irony is that they claim to uphold the charter, they campaigned for the charter, got the charter passed, and are now running while complaining that current officeholders aren't following the charter.

They aren't either, it seems.

"Yours in Honest Government" indeed.

Yes, this is America, and in America, when you pass a law, you follow a law; you don't pass a law, claim to love and revere the law, and then believe yourself so above the law that you're free to disregard the law whenever it suits you.

Let's all go to the polls and send these people back under the rocks they crawled out from under.
