DOWNTOWN STADIUM?

Word is out on the street today that Mandalay Industries might be interested in building a new Stadium for the Minor League Triple A franchise in downtown Scranton. A few questions:
1. What is wrong with the current stadium at Moosic midway between Scranton and Wilkes Barre?
2. If a Stadium is built in downtown Scranton, what if anything will be Luzerne County’s contribution?
3. Will Luzerne County or Wilkes Barre be even part of the name?
4. If taxes for the new stadium are used to build it, what will be the tax base, Luzerne or Lackawanna County?
I’m all for rebuilding but not when you have a facility that is pretty efficient, had work done to it, and is quite sufficient the way it is. This is after all folks, minor league baseball. If Scranton wants to build a Stadium downtown, if they want to have the team become the Scranton Yankees or whatever, go for it. Just don’t come crying to Luzerne County taxpayers when you become a distressed city again and need money.

BARLETTA ENDORSED

Congressional candidate in the 11th Lou Barletta has gained the endorsement of Vietnam and Desert Storm veterans. The boost will very likely help the Hazleton Mayor in his bid to unseat long time Congressman Paul Kanjorski. Barletta recently opened up campaign headquarters in downtown Wilkes Barre across the street from Genetti’s on the corner of Washington And East Market Streets.

BATTLING HISTORY

The McCain-Palin ticket, getting a big boost from the convention still has some odds to overcome in the history department. History argues that parties rarely win three times in a row; just once in five chances since the end of World War II. The only time that happened was when George Herbert Walker Bush won in 1988. Mostly, Presidential elections are usually a referendum on the party holding the White House.
With an incumbent president holding a job approval rating of about 30 percent, a war that a majority of the public still believes is a mistake, an economy teetering on the brink of a recession, unemployment at a five-year high and mortgage foreclosures and delinquencies increasing at an alarming rate, this is certainly a challenging time for a party to be seeking a third term in the White House.
All that said, the Palin pick seems to have energized the GOP. Palin has brought in 14 million dollars to the McCain coffers in the last two weeks and it appears there is more where that came from. While history might not be on their side, the McCain camp has a new sprint in their step. Less than that has changed history.

You Luzerne County folks were out the day they named it the Lackawannna County Stadium! Then they resisted selling naming rights for 18 years because they wanted it to stay that way! Now the County guys are brilliant because they finally sold what could have earned a tidy sum from day one! The theys were Democrats by the way.

David,

Did you happen to know that Lou Barletta is an avid Yankee's fan or were the pics purely conincidental?

As for Pete's comment the provincialism in this area is what everyone else in this state wants. When we start thinking regional as David has questioned then Philadelphia and Pittsburgh will have to take notice.

I am surprised no one has highlighted the fact that Rendell wants to toll I-80 which means the people from Northeastern PA will fund the bridge repairs and upgrades. In realty Philadelphia and Pittsburg will see the big dollars. I know there will be those who will state the drivers from NY and NJ to Ohio and west will contribute but I am not concerned about them. There are travelers from the south that go north along I-95 that quells that argument. Why isn't the tolling issue statewide? We are all in this together aren't we? Are we all Pennsylvanians or Hazletonians, Wilkes Barrians, Scrantonians, Harvey's Lakers, etc.

distressed city again???!!! Don't you mean more distressed? You mean were not distressed anymore?! Of course we are, Mayor Doherty keeps us that way so he doesn't have to settle contracts with the unions. We will be undistressed when people wake up and stop voting for people who pander to special interest groups and their friends, instead of the people they are supposed to represent.
