The LuLac Edition #1497, March 4th, 2011

PHOTO INDEX: "MAYBE I'M AMAZED" LOGO.

MAYBE I’M AMAZED

Maybe I’m Amazed……..that the great state of Ohio which was once the bastion of great Democrats like John Glenn, John Gilligan and Howard Metzenbaum now are governed by a guy (John Kasickh) who calls police officers idiots. What is even more amazing is that he did not do it in bed with his wife with a little pillow talk, he did not do it in private to friends but said it loudly and proudly before a group of students. In public.
Maybe I’m Amazed…..that even when a restaurant that Thom Greco is not even running (Mr. Tony’s) he still has to get his name in the paper over some dispute with the Mayor.
Maybe I’m Amazed…..that Steve Urban is running for a myriad of offices again. I kind of understand his spaghetti sauce strategy (through it against the wall and see what sticks) but I agree with Controller Walter Griffith who said it confuses the average voters. Walter is right, guys like Walter, Urban, myself and some of our readers like the “inside baseball” stuff of politics. But the average voter gets confused because they don’t know who’s who.
Maybe I’m Amazed…….that in Athens, Greece a driver can be given a citation for being unkempt and dressed sloppily. Two thoughts, what would Ohio Governor John Kasick say and my goodness, the jails would be crowded here in Lulac land with some of the stuff I see people wearing rolling into Sam’s Club. All I can say is you have to have a lot of self confidence to wear pajama bottoms out during sub freezing weather. And don’t even get me started on the craze they call “pajama jeans”.
Maybe I’m Amazed……that WVIA TV got criticized by some the other night for asking for money during the airing of the fine documentary “Miller’s Tale”. WVIA TV because of the progressive GOP Senate and House is an endangered species. They also co-produced the film and made it happen with an entre for the filmmaker to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Two of the Executive Producers were Tom Curra and A. William Kelly (better known as “Bill”). Why wouldn’t they ask for pledges? First off, they invested time and effort into it and need the money. Second, the pledge breaks were to me, non intrusive. Third, with all due respect to WVIA TV, you could tape it and put it on a DVR and fast forward. I get the point that it broke up the continuity of the documentary but I also see the need to capitalize on the airing of it.
Maybe I’m Amazed……that my first introduction to the late actress Jane Russell was when she was doing Playtex commercials in the 60s. Well past 45 then, it was still no surprise that she was a sex symbol of her day.
Maybe I’m Amazed…….that the trial of State Senator Jane Orie ended in a mistrial. I might be wrong but it seems to me that I agree with my old friend Dr. Joe Leonardi who believed that you can’t criminalize politics. The toughest thing about these indictments is the fact that the line between a political figure and public servant is very thin indeed. However this mistrial had nothing to do with a jury but because of some faulty documents offered by the defense.
Maybe I’m Amazed……..that the recent walk out (on their lunch hour mind you) by Social Security workers on Baltimore Drive is only all about the budget cutbacks and how it will affect Social Security recipients. The walkers say that a government cutback will cut back on services to their clientele. Not to mention the loss of their $25.00 an hour government jobs. But I’m sure that was way down their list of priorities when they went on their “lunch hour”.
Maybe I’m Amazed…..that I’m not so amazed that the two Deputy Sheriffs in Luzerne county who took out PFA’s against each other recently withdrew them.
Maybe I’m Amazed…….that anyone would not think that the suspension and the heavy handed manner in which it was offered to Wilkes Barre Attorney Jim Hayward had anything to do with his legal tussle with the powers that be at Luzerne County Children & Youth. When a fellow Attorney like Michael Pendolphi says that Hayward’s allegations about lying case workers are 100 % true (as told to the Times Leader) then you know very well where there is smoke there is fire.

I agree with you on the WVIA program.

The WVIA attacks came from Steve Corbett. I have heard there was a fallout between the WILKers and WVIA, that is why there is no more talking back to the talkers, and obviously Corbett is using the public airwaves to carry out his personal vendetta.

As far as Soc. Sec. stuff: I listened to the head of the union on the radio. He talked about how the backlogs would increase. My first thoughts were; "cut the deadwood, streamline the place, make it more efficient and decrease the backlog. Not spend more money.

I DID NOT HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT A FALL OUT WITH WVIA TV. PERSONALLY EVEN THOUGH I ENJOYED WATCHING "TALK BACK TO THE TALKERS", IT MIGHT HAVE RUN ITS COURSE. AS FOR CORBETT'S VENDETTA, I HEARD HIM AND HE WAS JUST STATING THE OPINION THAT HE WOULD HAVE PREFERRED A SEAMLESS PROGRAM. BUT AS I POINTED OUT, PUBLIC TV DOES NOT HAVE THAT LUXURY WITH THIS CONGRESS.

IN ANY TYPE OF SITUATION DEALING WITH CLAIMS, YOU ALWAYS HAVE A BACK LOG AND PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT. SS ALREADY HAS A HIRING FREEZE SO I CAN SEE WHERE THE UNION HEAD IS COMING FROM TO A POINT.

On the pajama jeans, just what the LuLac nation needs. I am struck by the number of slobs that go out in public dressed like bums. Swear to God, I've seen homeless people dressed better than some guys and gals I see exiting 2010 Tahoes and Escalades. No one has any pride anymore in how they present themselves and pajama jeans aren't going to help!

The reason why the homeless people look so good is because they got Yonki's, Eric Sheiner's and Doc Leonardi's old clothes.

Two slight errors: Kasich is spelled with a final h and not k. and the occasion for the Governor to call the highway patrol officer an idiot was actually an event his office staged to address the personnel of the Ohio equivalent of the EPA. He was trying to subtly convince the enforcers not to screw up future economic development by being overzealous when applying Ohio's environmental laws. The laughable part of the story was how naive his office was to believe that someone would not bring some device to record the audio and/or video portion of this farce. Joke is on him!

Mr Yonki,
Did you chose not to run my remarks regarding Corbetts influence or lack thereof and a somewhat negative, but realistic comment regarding WILK or was it an oversight? If you decided not to run it, those who call you a WILK apologist and protector are right although I still support your right to edit your site as you see fit. I guess if posters dont sing the WILK praises then they are edited out. Shame on you.
I wonder if this will appear?

Just want to mention tht I was a donor to WVIA till I heard what Bill Kelly is paid. "Holy Donations Batman, that kind of pay requires a ton of $50 donations." Lets get real. I'll be the first to recognize that Bill does an outstanding job with the interviews with local business owners and also with keeping the dears lubed but come on, if he was forced to accpet a salary of $125,000 per year, would he quit? Honestly, He could take a major cut in pay and still earn a big buck for the area. I hate to be one of the eople who wants to see everyone eating beans but I do think that with public TV taking it on the chin with government money, guys like Bill must have a hardd face to ask working folk to donate when his salary is so large. Just think if he went on the air and said, "Hey folks, I plan to donate $50,000 back to WVIA, wouldn't that be something?

I DON'T UNDERSTAND YOUR LOGIC THERE. WOULD YOU STOP GOING TO YANKEE STADIUM BECAUSE THEY PAY DEREK JETER MILLIONS? WOULD YOU STOP GIVING TO THE RED CROSS IF THE DIRECTOR IS PAID OVER $90,000 A YEAR?
but come on, if he was forced to accpet a salary of $125,000 per year, would he quit? Honestly, He could take a major cut in pay and still earn a big buck for the area.
I DON'T KNOW KELLY'S SALARY BUT IT IS CONSIDERABLE LESS THAN WHAT THE CEO OF BC NEPA IS MAKING AND THAT'S A NON PROFIT. AS FAR AS QUITTING, HE HASN'T DONE IT YET AND HE'S CLOSING IN ON 4 DECADES. SALARY IS A TOUGH THING TO LOOK AT HERE SINCE THE CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE THINK THAT TEN BUCKS AN HOUR IS SO SWELL. PEOPLE LOOK AT A SALARY LIKE KELLY'S AND SAY HE'S OVERPAID. BUT STAFF DID TAKE PAY CUTS, THEY DID VOLUNTARY FURLOUGHS AND ARE MAKING DO WITH LESS. REPLACE KELLY WITH A GUY MAKING $35,000 GRAND AND YOU GET A FLUNKY, NOT A BROADCAST PROFESSIONAL.
I hate to be one of the eople who wants to see everyone eating beans
I THINK YOU MIGHT BUT THAT SAID, I UNDERSTAND THAT BILL KELLY HAS NO AVERSION TO BEANS OF ANY KIND.

Wait a minute! The GM of the Yankees and the CEO of Blue Cross
are not on TV constantly begging for contributions! Kelly was and is probably overpaid by local standards. I dont know what kind of administrator he is but I am sure we could find a broadcast professional to do equally good local interviews for considerably less. Isnt Kelly about at retirement age anyway?

Anon 12:55 you have to understand that Yonk is acting like the capitilists he so slams on. WILK provides him with a free platform to promote his site and books, so it behooves him to edit or not publish negatives about them. It is his blog, so he get's to use it to benifit himself the most.

As far as Bill Kelly. His salary is 170,000/year, reduced by 30%, so it 2as around 200,000. In a private business, one should make whatever they like. But PBS is tax payer supported and supplemented by begging for donations from the community, many who only make around 30,000/year. So, it is a releveant issue.

At 2:43 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

7:31 Right on both points. The WILK part is understandable, but to say Kellys salary is not releveant is just silly. Almost 50%of Americans are ok with the budget slash for Public Broadcasting and if every station has a Bill Kelly thats got to be part of the problem. I dont think they all do! $170,000 is still about 70,000 too high. Again its taxpayer supported and donation funded and not living up to its potential.
