PAM BONDI MAKES HISTORY

Senate Democrats say they will hold Attorney General Pam Bondi “accountable” for her leadership of the Department of Justice and for what they view as her contemptuous attitude toward them, which they say was evident during a combative Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this week.

Democratic senators acknowledge they don’t have much leverage over the Trump Justice Department now, but they’re laying the groundwork for a war with the administration if they flip the Senate in 2026.

“I was literally just talking to some of my Democratic House colleagues on Judiciary about the unprecedented nature of that kind of slandering obstruction of oversight,” Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said of Bondi’s personal attacks on Democratic senators during Tuesday’s hearing.

Schiff, a first-term senator, said his Senate colleagues told him Bondi’s political attacks on senators during an oversight hearing were “really unprecedented.”

He said Democrats would try their best to push back on Bondi’s refusal to answer their questions in the coming days and weeks, but he acknowledged they would need help from Republicans to get anywhere.  (The Hill, LuLac)

TRUMP TO DENY BACK PAY TO

FED WORKERS

DURING SHUTDOWN

REMEMBER, HE WAS

A DEADBEAT WHO STIFFED

HIS VENDORS

The government shutdown is now continuing and no end is in sight as Democrats continue to advocate for extending Affordable Care Act subsidies. Republicans have not wavered, saying that they could discuss the subsidies after the government reopens. In addition, President Trump has floated the possibility that some of the roughly 600,000 furloughed federal workers could be denied back pay once the government reopens, despite a 2019 law intended to ensure federal employees are compensated after a shutdown.

NO PAY FOR

CONTROLLERS

Nearly 11,000 certified controllers have to work during the shutdown, but they will not be paid until after the government opens again, says NPR's Joel Rose. During the last government shutdown in 2019, air traffic controllers reported higher-than-normal sick calls, which caused significant delays at major airports on the East Coast and likely contributed to the end of the shutdown. At rural airports, a federal program called Essential Air Service subsidizes flights, but the Trump administration says that funds for the program could run out as soon as this weekend if the shutdown continues. Rose says that could be significant for the almost 170 communities in the country that use the program.

You really can’t blame the controllers for staying away knowing that their health care will be impacted by this cruel Republican shutdown. Plus the fact that the deadbeat President might not pay them…..why should they?

BRESNAHAN CONFIRMS TROLLEY MUSEUM TO REMAIN OPEN DURING SHUTDOWN

Congressman Rob Bresnehan (Photo: LuLac archives)

U.S. Representative Rob Bresnahan, Jr. (PA-08) announced the Electric City Trolley Museum, a volunteer non-profit museum located on federal property, will remain open despite the government shutdown. The Trolley Museum shares its location and road entrance with the Steamtown National Historic Site, which is operated by the National Parks Service (NPS) and closed during the government shutdown.

“The Trolley Museum, a volunteer-operated museum, was in jeopardy of being shuttered because it sits on federal property,” said Rep. Bresnahan. “The Trolley Museum in Scranton is an excellent attraction, showcasing the spirit of innovation that still drives our region today. After being notified of the situation, my office was in communication with Steamtown and NPS officials to resolve this matter, and I would like to thank them for keeping my office updated throughout the process. Our team will continue to work through the Schumer shutdown to assist Northeastern Pennsylvania however we can.”

The federal government shutdown, which began on Wednesday, October 1, resulted in the partial closure of NPS sites, including the closure of Steamtown.

There was n mention in this release that by not coming to the bargaining table, the health care cuts in Medicaid and SNAP which Bresnhan and Dan Meuser voted for are the main reason for the shutdown.

SHAPIRO ADMINISTRATION EXPANDS STATEWIDE TRUCK PARKING OPTIONS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES, SUPPORTING FREIGHT MOVEMENT AND IMPROVING DRIVERS' SAFETY

Governor Josh Shapiro (Photo: LuLac archives)

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), Pennsylvania Turnpike (PA Turnpike), and Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association officials announced that the Commonwealth is adding 1,202 truck parking spaces in 133 locations by the end of 2026. In addition, the PA Turnpike is evaluating opportunities for more than 600 additional spaces across its system. This is the first statewide expansion of designated parking spaces other than through facility construction projects and will provide safe options for commercial drivers to meet federal hours-of-service rest requirements, helping to address a longstanding, nationwide challenge and improving driver safety.

"Truck parking is a nationwide issue, and with the high volume of freight traffic coming through Pennsylvania, the Shapiro Administration knew that we needed to tackle this problem," PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said. "As a commercial driver's license-holder myself, I know how important this commonsense approach is to our economy and workforce. By adding these spots - and looking at ways to add even more - we're giving truckers many more options to safely park and meet their rest requirements."

PennDOT's designated truck parking spots will be established on Interstate on-ramps with no sight distance or safety concerns, weigh stations used for PSP motor carrier safety enforcement, and various other locations within highway right of way. PennDOT and PSP staff collaborated closely to identify sites that can be designated quickly and cost-effectively. Spots will be marked with truck-parking signage installed by PennDOT.

Child Nutrition  Act

President Johnson signed the Chi ld Nutrition Act into law. Among other things, it supplemented the existing National School Lunch Program by establishing the School Breakfast Program, initially as a two-year pilot program for schools in poor neighborhoods.

The Child Nutrition Act of 1966 (CNA) is a United States federal law (act) signed on October 11, 1966 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The Act was created as a result of the "years of cumulative successful experience under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) to help meet the nutritional needs of children." The National School Lunch Program feeds 30.5 million children per day (as of 2007). NSLP was operated in over 101,000 public and nonprofit private schools in 2007.[1] The Special Milk Program, functioning since 1954, was extended to June 30, 1970 and incorporated into the act. The act also provided Federal funding assistance towards non-food purchases for school equipment.

The act established the School Breakfast Program, a federally assisted meal program that provides low-cost or free breakfasts to children in public and non-profit schools as well as child care institutions. During the signing of the act, the president remarked that "good food is essential to good learning."

It is important for food programs such as these in schools because some students may receive all their meals from school. According to the CDC, a poor diet can lead to energy imbalance (e.g., eating more calories than one expends through physical activity) and can increase one’s risk for overweight and obesity. Without a well balanced diet it could cause a child's brain to not develop normally (Berger, 172). Children may be malnourished and could possibly suffer from Protein-calorie malnutrition (Berger 172). In the long run if children do suffer from lack of nutrients it will not only impede brain growth but affect their ability to learn as well (Berger, 172). Some students have recognized the importance of a well balanced diet and started programs on a local level. Programs like the School Food Plus Initiative & E.A.T.W.I.S.E (Cooper, 54). Parents are also getting in on the action and have formed school district wellness committees around the country. They are looking forward to developing wellness policies that will charge local school districts with setting targets for nutrition education…

Ironically, this program has been slashed by a cruel administration that has more priorities than keeping kids fed with nutritious foods. Instead they give tax breaks to billionaires and 49 years ago this week the number one song in LuLac land and America was “Cherish” by The Association.
