STILL STANDING STRONG FOR JOE

DEBATE THOUGHTS

This was not Joe Biden’s best performance. Something was off. It reminded me of the first debate in 1984 between Walter Mondale and Ronald Reagan. Reagan appeared overwhelmed with stats, and at times seemed confused. Nancy Reagan was outraged because he was over prepared, not speaking from the heart. Not Reagan being Reagan.

The same thing happened with Biden. He had too many facts and stats in his head. Plus his voice was weak. It got stronger but first impressions count.

Trump on the other hand was a plain liar. He misrepresented policies, took credit for stuff that even Obama did in 2014 and lied. The biggest whopper of all was that he didn’t have sex with a porn star. Everything that was a fact he disputed saying it wasn’t true.  He brought up the same pile of shit he always did and CNN never called him on it.

Here are the facts: Biden had a rough night but he told the truth.

Trump lied. Over and over.

My biggest fear came true. By debating Trump, the Biden team gave this slob and traitor a platform. This should never have happened.

The Democrats are talking about removing Biden from the ticket. Wrong. They need to collectively get off their asses and work like hell to destroy Trump. Plus Scranton Joe needs to come back. He had the opportunity to punch Trump in the mouth and didn’t.  This was not a Biden problem but a staff one.

Bottom line is this. Biden wasn’t great but Trump proved to be he was mentally ill. He refused to answer questions. But Biden never called him on his lack of knowledge.
It still is a binary choice and as an American, not a Democrat., I stand with the guy who had an off night rather than the lying pile of  crap who is a convicted felon, racist, insurrectionist, rapist and first class (with apologies to the species) PIG!

MAYOR JIMMY CONNORS

Former Scranton Mayor Jimmy Connors passed away yesterday. Ironically I found out when I was talking to a member of the Poets at the Luzerne/Wyoming County Area Agency on Aging event at Mohegan Sun. As I was walking out, I ran into the band member and quipped, “The only thing you didn’t have up there today with you was Jimmy Connors”.He then told me Connors had passed away. In that moment I felt that Connors was saying goodbye to us.   Connors took the stage and even had a cassette tape made with the band.

Connors became Mayor when elected in 1989 after David Wentzel the last Republican Mayor of Scranton didn’t run for another term. Connors held roles in the city of Scranton and was well know but still underrated. Many people saw him as a kind man but not necessarily a tough political foe. The saying “Don’t mistake my kindness for weakness” was tailor made for Jimmy Connors.

He became Mayor promising the folks a Mall and by God they got a Mall.

Connors told the sprawling neighborhoods in Scranton that he wouldn’t forget them and he didn’t.

Connors of course had his detractors. He had vigorous competition in each election he ran in. He ran first as a Republican but then became the staunchest Democrat you’ve even seen. He knew how to pick winners. When Ed Rendell was up against Bob Casey for Governor in 2022, Jimmy went against the grain.

His strength came from the fact that he followed the motto of the late Mayor Jim McNulty. “People want to be validated.” In his three terms, Connors was front and center with the people.

It was customary for Connors the Mayor and his Chief of Police Jim Klee to go to wakes of residents of Scranton who passed away. Some of them they knew, some were just regular folks who were remembered. That meant a lot to have the Mayor read it in the paper and come to share the grief of a family. Cynical ;political operatives made fun of it at the time but thregular folks never forgot him or that kindness.

Through the years Jimmy and I saw each other at Rendell events, his first Inauguration, all of the Cartwright campaigns, meeting Joe Biden at Fox Hill and other political events.

We swapped stories and some were told three or four times by him but I never minded. Those talks aged like fine wine and were cherished.

He’ll not be remembered for the tax cuts, the tax hikes, the paved roads or even his on stage presence. He’ll be remembered as a guy who not only remembered where he came from but where his citizens were going.

Jimmy, Chief Klee is looking for you! RIP kind sir!

Congressman Matt Cartwright (PA-08) released the following statement on the passing of former Scranton Mayor James Connors:

“Marion and I mourn the loss of our longtime friend and a trusted mentor. While we grieve his passing, we also send our sincerest condolences to his beloved wife, Susie, his entire family, and his many, many friends. The love and support he showered upon the city was surpassed only by the unwavering affection bestowed upon him by his fellow citizens. The lights in the Electric City just got a little bit dimmer with the passing of Scranton Mayor James Connors. He will be forever missed but never forgotten.”

CASEY, FETTERMAN, BROWN URGE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO BLOCK U.S. STEEL ACQUISITION, PROTECT TRADE ENFORCEMENT AND AMERICAN WORKERS

IN LETTER, THE SENATORS EXPRESS CONCERN ABOUT HOW PENDING SALE OF U.S. STEEL COULD THREATEN TRADE ENFORCEMENT

SENATORS ADVOCATE TO PROTECT DOMESTIC STEEL INDUSTRY

Senators Fetterman and Casey (LuLac archives)

U.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) John Fetterman (D-PA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) raised the alarm that Nippon’s proposed purchase of U.S. Steel would destabilize America’s trade enforcement system—and in the process threaten American industry, workers, and national security.

The Senators wrote, “Nippon’s acquisition of U.S. Steel poses a grave threat to the international trade system that seeks to protect American manufacturers and workers from those who would unfairly dump steel into the American market. Given the clear and present threats that a Nippon Steel acquisition poses to American workers and a critical industry, we believe executive action to block this deal is urgent.”

In a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, Casey, Fetterman, and Brown warn that Nippon Steel’s well-documented record of dumping steel products in the U.S. presents a clear conflict with our ability to continue to defend our domestic steel industry—and call on the Biden Administration to urgently block the deal. The Senators raised several concerns about the pending sale, including how Nippon could use U.S. Steel’s status as an American company to destabilize the trade enforcement system. The sale could not only impact domestic steel prices and cost Americans their jobs, but could potentially grant foreign steelmakers unprecedented and unchecked access to the U.S. market.

Senators Casey, Fetterman, and Brown have raised concerns about Nippon Steel’s proposed purchase of U.S. Steel since it was announced. Citing national security concerns, the Senators immediately pressed the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to block the sale. Casey and Fetterman voiced their concern about how the acquisition may harm Pennsylvania workers and demanded Nippon to declare the company’s commitment to Pennsylvania. Casey and Fetterman also have pressed Nippon on their commitments to Pennsylvania workers and families who could be negatively impacted by the sale. The Senators also pushed the Biden Administration to oppose the acquisition, and applauded President Biden’s opposition of the sale.

LT. GOV. AUSTIN DAVIS CALLS FOR CONTINUED INVESTMENTS IN GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION STRATEGIES AT ROUNDTABLE WITH LOCAL LEADERS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS

Lt. Governor Austin Davis (Photo: Shapiro website)

Lt. Gov. Austin Davis joined state and local leaders, law enforcement officials, victim advocates and community-based organizations at a roundtable conversation in Harrisburg to highlight strategies that are working - as Pennsylvania experienced the nation's second-biggest decline in gun homicides last year - and call for additional investments to reduce violence and make communities safer.

"Pennsylvanians deserve to be safe and feel safe, no matter what they look like or where they live, but that feeling of safety has been shattered for many people in Harrisburg and surrounding communities," said Lt. Gov. Davis. "The Shapiro-Davis Administration is taking a holistic approach to addressing the epidemic of gun violence, and the strategies we're funding - supporting law enforcement, as well as community-based organizations that help to prevent violence - are starting to see results. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we should celebrate progress. More importantly, we should keep investing in strategies that are working, so we can bring that progress to more communities."

In February, Gov. Josh Shapiro proposed a state budget that invests $100 million to address and prevent gun violence in Pennsylvania communities. The Shapiro-Davis budget includes an $11.5 million investment in creating a statewide Building Opportunity through Out of School Time program, a $1 million investment to stand up and staff an Office of Gun Violence Prevention within the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) and $1 million in funding for a Firearm Injury Prevention Program within the Department of Health.

Speakers Include:

Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis

PA State Senator Vincent Hughes, Senate Democratic Appropriations Chair

State Representative Patty Kim

Dauphin County Commissioners George P. Hartwick III and Justin Douglas

Harrisburg Police Captain Russell Winder Jr. (Community Services Division)
