PHOTO INDEX: KENNEDY NIXON DEBATES 50 YEARS AGO TONIGHT.

50 YEARS AGO TONIGHT….

One half century ago tonight, Senator John F. Kennedy squared off against Richard Nixon, then Vice President in the first televised debate in American politics. Hearkening back to the :Lincoln-0Douglas debates, this much anticipated prime time program (produced incidentally by the late Don Hewitt, he of “60 Minutes” fame) the stand off was viewed by millions of Americans. The debate established Kennedy as a serious candidate, one that could share the stage with a sitting Vice President. I was very young at the time, in the first grade as a matter of fact. But there was a buzz about this event from the nuns all the way to parents talking about who seemed better. People who heard the debate on radio thought Nixon won, people who saw Kennedy vs. Nixon on TV thought JFK had in overwhelmingly. This debate was the seminal event on the road leading to the media influence that has permeated politics ever since. Here's a look back:

Kennedy and Nixon actually debated 13 years earlier, April, 1947, in McKeesport, Penna. The two were then freshman Congressmen.
They rode to and from the debate together by train.
I recall Nixon speaking of this event on a TV program shortly before his death in 1994.
Good "gotcha" trivia for your political junkie friends who think they know it all.
